ESL Grammar Curriculum The ESL Grammar Courses are designed to teach grammar in usage. The courses are divided into three levels based on the targeted grammar structures. Students are assessed into the grammar classes through the ESL Compass grammar test and the writing section of the ESL Assessment. ESL Grammar 0305, 0310, and 0315, all have departmental finals, which constitute 50% of the final course grade. ESLG 0305 Chapters 1-7, 10, and 11 from Fundamentals of English Grammar Vol. A &B should be covered. Targeted Structures: Parts of Speech (including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles and functions: subject, direct/indirect objects) o Nouns/Pronouns (including count/noncount, singular/plural, possessive forms) o Articles (introduction) Basic word order (including adjective and adverb placement) Question formation (Yes/No, tag, and Information questions; Short Answers) Present tense (simple and progressive) Past tense (simple and progressive), including irregular forms Future tense (simple and progressive) Present and Past Perfect Negatives (contractions) Subject-Verb Agreement Modal verbs Passive voice ESLG 0310 Chapters 20, 14, and 15 from Understanding English Grammar and prepositions should be covered. Targeted Structures: Prepositions of Time Prepositions of Location Prepositions of Directions Phrasal Verbs Preposition – Adjective Combinations Gerunds & Infinitives Conditionals ESLG 0315 Chapters 5, 12, 13, 17, and 18 in Understanding and Using English Grammar should be covered. This course should include a writing component to teach students how to apply what they have learned in grammar to their essay writing.
