Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology Internships
The Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA) at the University of Arizona is a
unique research institution whose mission is to apply the principles and methods of social science
toward the understanding and alleviation of world problems. BARA hosts interns who are in the
middle and advanced stages of their undergraduate education, have demonstrated superior ability in
their coursework, and wish to apply their knowledge and skills to an actual problem. Most internships
are offered for academic credit, although some students earn small stipends if the project to which they
are assigned has available funds. Internships are open to students who have at least a junior standing
and at least a 3.2 grade point average; excellent writing skills are required as well. Individuals may
hold an internship position in the semester immediately following their graduation.
BARA interns work directly with research faculty and may work individually or on a project
team. Internships are tailored to the goals of each individual. Interns have access to the University of
Arizona library, computing, and other resources. They gain professional experience and present the
results of their work in campus seminars, professional society meetings, and publications. Interns may
be employed beyond their internship as warranted by their performance and project requirements.
The following guidelines have been developed for interns in BARA.
1.
Interns receive Anthropology credit for their work (3 credit hours for 145 hours of work).
During the fall and spring terms, interns work an average of 10 hours per week for 16 weeks. Summer
interns work 15-30 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. Students may receive a maximum of 6 credit
hours from a BARA internship.
2.
Interns may enroll in either Level 1 or Level 2 internships. Level 1 internships are designed for
students who seek an introduction to applied anthropology. Level 1 interns participate in activities such
as coding and entering data, and maintaining computer and office files for cultural resource projects.
Level 2 internships are designed for advanced students who have completed most of their coursework
and/or have significant experience in the world of work. Level 2 interns seek internships in BARA for
an opportunity to put their knowledge and skills into practice.
3.
Interns work with research faculty to develop objectives, establish expectations, and articulate a
program plan. Copies of the program plan are submitted to the faculty sponsor and BARA business
manager and are placed in the student’s academic file. Level 2 interns must be involved in at least two
phases of a research project, such as design, implementation, and evaluation. Each intern is evaluated
by the faculty sponsor at the middle and end of the internship with respect to his or her individual plan.
4.
Level 1 interns work with faculty and other interns and learn the techniques and skills used by
applied anthropologists. Level 2 interns attend research or project team meetings, interact with
contractors, and present the results of their work to others.
