CLASS TITLE: SURVEYING ASSISTANT II
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Survey Crew Supervisor, operate a variety of survey equipment
to perform field surveys; provide information and directions to surveying crew members as
assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Surveying Assistant II incumbents perform advanced surveying duties. Incumbents
operate more complex survey equipment and provide work direction to survey crew
members. The Surveying Assistant I classification is the entry-level class in this series.
Incumbents perform basic surveying duties including locating survey markers, placing rods
on bench marks and updating survey records.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Operate a variety of surveying equipment and instruments to read rod elevations for
geothermal and earthquake subsidence.
Set up transit over point on tangent; set points and project lines and triangles; construct
baselines as required.
Operate automatic level to assure accurate level readings; operate a computer for
recording information of precise level runs.
Utilize tie cards to measure for and locate monument corners; maintain and update tie
cards as needed.
Survey and record solid waste site measures to obtain elevation readings and waste site
quantity measurements; measure, lay out and mark solid waste site and City boundaries
in preparation for aerial photos.
Perform preliminary surveys of roads, bridges, borrow pits, topography and cross
sections; measure and establish elevation grades for road construction projects; set road
construction stakes and assure for accuracy.
Assure compliance with applicable safety regulations; assure proper use of signs, flags,
vests, goggles and masks as appropriate.
Operate technical surveying equipment to measure and calculate distances; operate
various rods to measure elevations including lenker rods, jena precise level rods and
Wilde inverted rods.

Construct concrete monument to identify lot corners; stamp precise survey information on
monument and set in precise location.
Assist public works department personnel with road construction projects, locating land
points such as center lines, turn lanes and return lanes for painting.
Conduct preliminary surveys for construction projects including bridges, roads, curbs and
gutters; establish construction baseline following blueprint specifications.
Prepare and maintain a variety of records including land elevations, grades, bench mark
locations and monument locations.
Perform surveys to establish and clarify property boundaries and for staking right-of-ways.
Operate a variety of specialized surveying instruments and equipment; operate a motor
vehicle and a variety of power and hand tools; maintain instruments, tools and vehicles in
safe and proper working condition.
Train and assign duties to other surveying personnel as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Tools and equipment used in land surveys.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Policies and objectives of assigned program and activities.

Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Principles of training and providing work direction.
Statistical methods and procedures.
ABILITY TO:
Set up, calibrate, operate and maintain technical surveying equipment.
Assure compliance with applicable safety regulations.
Read and understand tie cards.
Establish a land survey baseline.
Perform preliminary surveys of roads, bridges, borrow pits, topography and cross
sections.
Read and understand blueprints, maps and sketches.
Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Work cooperatively with others.
Assign and review the work of others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: two years field surveying experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Indoor and outdoor work environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Physical abilities required include dexterity of hands and fingers to operate various
specialized surveying equipment, seeing to drive a vehicle and to read survey equipment
and to locate survey markers, climbing and standing at heights while working on high rock
formations, bridges and canal walls, bending at the waist to place traffic control devices, to
set stakes and to lift equipment, climbing, pulling and pushing, standing for long periods of
time, walking on rough uneven surfaces, and speaking to exchange information and make
presentations.
Incumbents may be exposed to snakes, insects, working near heavy vehicle traffic flow,
extreme weather conditions, heat, dust, and fumes.
