Road Safety Instructions for Runners and Walkers Thank you very much for participating in the Point Douglas Run or Walk in support of local community centres. We appreciate your time and positive energy. The Point Douglas event is a fun-run/walk and will not have police providing right-of-way control. No runner/walker has right-of-way where you would not normally have it. You are responsible for your own safety and for obeying the rules of the road. As a fun-run/walk there is no timing; other than the race clock. The route is primarily on sidewalks and pathways. The start of the race is on Rover which does not have sidewalks. It is critical that you remain strictly on the very left hand side of Rover such that there is no potential conflict with vehicular traffic. Please listen to the course-marshals positioned at the start who are there to ensure participants remain on the left. The course will be clearly marked; where there are sidewalks and pathways please remain strictly on these. Please listen to instructions that Course Marshalls provide; please note the Course Marshalls will NOT be controlling traffic; runners/walkers will not have right-of-way where you would not normally have it. Runners/walkers must give right of way to any vehicles you encounter along the route. If you approach an intersection where vehicular traffic was on a through street and the running/walking route has a stop sign, if a vehicle approaches at the same time as you, you must stop and wait until the vehicle passes. Safety is of paramount importance; never assume what motorists are thinking. Page 1 of 2 Exercise caution. Before you step off the curb, make sure that all vehicles in the roadway have stopped for you and that all drivers can see you. Just because one car has stopped doesn't mean a car coming from behind or in an adjacent lane will stop. Runners and walkers must stop at the curb and look left-right and left again before stepping out into the street and should always watch for turning vehicles. Some MPI Safety tips for pedestrians: Pedestrians can never assume what the motorists are thinking. Regardless what age you are, it's important to exercise caution while running/walking. Before stepping off the curb, make sure that all vehicles in the roadway have stopped for you and that all drivers can see you. Just because one car has stopped doesn't mean a car coming from behind or in an adjacent lane will stop. We encourage pedestrians to take note of the following safety tips: Cross intersections defensively. Always watch for turning vehicles. You have the legal right to be there, but that doesn’t protect you from the carelessness of some motorists. Turning drivers have more concern for other vehicles than for pedestrians. Cross only at intersections whenever possible, preferably at those controlled by signs or traffic control signs. When crossing the street, regardless of the availability of signals, cross as quickly as possible. Minimize your time in the roadway. No matter what age you are, it is important to stop at the curb and look left-right and left again before stepping out into the street even when the light is green and the signal says "walk". Before stepping off the curb, make sure that all vehicles in the roadway have stopped for you and that all drivers can see you. Just because one car has stopped does not mean that a car coming from behind or in an adjacent lane will stop. The second driver may not have noticed you standing there and may not be able to see you crossing in front of the stopped vehicle. Do everything possible to increase your chances of seeing and being seen by drivers at night. Use the best lit streets available, use a light or wear or carry reflective or bright coloured clothing. Fabric retro-reflective tape worn around the arm can make a pedestrian visible to a driver at 200 meters instead of 45 meters. Hold small children by the hand when crossing. Teach your children the rules of the road for their protection.
