Information for Candidates for Student Government Office or Class Office SGA Officers Thank you for your interest in participating in student government. There are two categories of elected office at Sherwood High School. First, there are the leaders of the Student Government Association (S.G.A.). These offices consist of President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Students who are elected to these positions MUST take the student government class. Students, who are interested in being involved in student government, but not necessarily in leadership positions, can serve as representatives in General Assembly once a month. These representatives are elected in class at the beginning of each semester. Class Officers The other category includes leaders of each class or grade level in the school. Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen all elect officers to serve as their Class President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. These officers are responsible for organizing class (grade) activities throughout the year and for participating in Student Government meetings and activities. Responsibilities of Office Attached are the jobs and responsibilities for each position. Please review the positions and their responsibilities before deciding which office you would like to run for. Remember that serving in a leadership position means taking on a large responsibility. You will need to spend significant time both in and after school fulfilling your duties as an officer. You will need to miss classes and will be responsible for making up missed work. You will need to give up Friday and Saturday nights to help with activities. You should treat the obligation of office as seriously as you would your responsibilities in other activities such as Rock and Roll Revival or a sports team. DO NOT run for office if you are not willing to make it a priority. Your Campaign For your campaign you will be allowed to display 3 posters which must be signed by your grade level administrator before you hang them. These posters may be placed only on painted brick walls and bulletin boards throughout the school. All candidates are expected to run a positive campaign. Derogatory posters or statements about other candidates will be grounds for removal from the race. Speeches All candidates will be taped presenting a campaign speech and answering student questions. The tape will be shown in required social studies classes prior to the election.
