Proposal Title Synthesis, properties and application of ionic liquids Proposals Acronym ILs-SPA Thematic Priority: nanosciences_nanotechnologies_materials_and_new_production_technologies Sub-thematic Priority: materials Proposal Abstract Ionic liquids (ILs) exhibit many interesting properties and have successfully replaced traditional organic solvents. The aim of the project is to propose synthesis of new ionic liquids (protic, aprotic, chiral, sweet, task-specific, trigeminal tricationic ILs). Their properties, such as density, viscosity, thermal stability, antimicrobial activities, surface activity, contact angle will be examined. Moreover, an application of ILs as a reaction media, for separation methods, wood preservation, embalming and tissue preservation will broaden the range of their use and will limit the disposal of toxic substances to the environment. Proposal Description Ionic liquids have been intensively examined for the last five years. They are of interest not only among scientists but industry, too. Our group is experienced in synthesis of new compounds and looking for vast application in industry. We want to create ILs of low toxicity and low price. Proposal Objectives It is the scientific aim of the work to synthesize a new group of compounds having expected for application properties. The technological aim comprises of application of ILs in wood preservation, separation methods, solvent in reactions and medical diagnostics. Proposed Method The synthesis will be led according to Menschutkin reaction and ion-exchange reaction. We will examine and optimize isolation of pure ILs from reaction mixture. The product purity will be controlled in the stage of selection of synthesis and isolation methods. Proposal Added Value New compounds will be synthesized, identified and described with physicochemical parameters. The new ILs are solvents for chemical reactions, i.e. green solvents. Moreover, they can find applications for wood preservation, medical diagnostics (embalming and tissue preservation) and separation processes. Proposal Impact ILs can be called a new multifunctional material. Their discovery enables production of preparations protected against microbial contamination. These advantages of ILs allow to decrease cost of many preparations. Our studies will have an essential impact on the position and competitiveness of Europe to the USA and Asia. Role: partner Research Group Resources Description The studies will be held in laboratory for ILs synthesis, equipped with the instruments for compound analysis and extraction equipment. Moreover, laboratory for biological activity determination and wood preservation determination will be attracted in the project. Staff: 1 professor, 16 doctor, 8 PhD
