November 24, 2007 To: Bass Pro Shops Promotions Manager Mr. Thomas A. Keating From: Richard A. Empie Subject: Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture Dear Mr. Thomas A. Keating, In regards to: the “Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture” and how organizations can take an active roll in assuring the survival of the species. The “Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture” is a collaborative effort created with a specific purpose of paramount importance – to improve the habitat of the Eastern Brook Trout and return one of our most beautiful game fish to its native range in abundance as they once were. The project is a multi-faceted effort comprised of Fish and Wildlife agencies from 17 states, and is federally supported by agencies such as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Forest Services, National Park Services, and the Office of Surface Mining. Conservation organizations, academic institutions, businesses and corporations nation wide that have committed themselves to donating funds, are also playing an integral roll in ensuring the goals of the project are reached and the results of the joint-effort can be sustained in the future. Recent assessment data determining the strength of Brook Trout populations in the U.S. tells a disheartening tale of their decline in their natural habitat, yet this same data offers hope for the restoration and recovery of the species in many areas. Eastern Brook Trout reside in the most heavily populated and intensely industrialized regions of the United States. Land use over the past several hundred years has greatly impacted the quality of the rivers and streams they reside in. Although the Eastern Brook Trout have vanished from many of the rivers and streams they once thrived in, the possibility of recovery is greatly increased with efforts being put forth by those individuals and organizations taking part in the “Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture.” Despite the adversities the Eastern Brook Trout have been faced with, they have remained resilient; but without the assistance of man, they may soon vanish like a whisper in the night. The survival of this great species lies in the balance, their fate resting on man’s willingness to act on their behalf. The Native Brook Trout is one of the most captivating creature nature has graced the planet with. To experience the fascinating mystique of the Brook Trout is a unique experience for all who have had the pleasure of doing so – each trout having seemingly been hand painted by a divine artist. It would be devastating to see these celestial creatures pass in silence; forever lost. They have brought joy to many over the centuries and inspired conservationist philosophies and ideals in generations of individuals. Now it is our turn to give back to nature and to a world that has given us so much. We alone have the power to make the choice – we will either ensure their survival or we will allow this great species to become yet another casualty of our apathy – the choice is ours to make. Together we can succeed; divided we will inevitably fail. The time to act is now! Your help is needed! Each donation, regardless of how small will help benefit the cause and aid in ensuring both the success of the program and the protection of this great species for centuries to come. Whether you, yourself, wish to assist, or an organization or corporation you are affiliated with would be willing to contribute, your assistance is appreciated and welcomed. Any effort you may feel compelled to put forth, no matter how large or small your donation may be, will aid in furthering the cause while providing the business or corporation you are affiliated with positive publicity as a contributor. Any effort you wish to dedicate yourself to making is needed and will be gratefully accepted. All funds raised will go directly towards bettering the success of the “Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture.” Such funds collected will be used for field study work, administrative expenses as they relate to the program, and land acquisition in areas where deemed necessary to protect the habitat of the Eastern Brook Trout, thus helping to ensure their survival. Please, help us in our quest to save the Native Brook Trout. Together we can be successful in accomplishing our goal, a goal that will prove to be beneficial for generations to come. Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter! Richard A. Empie (508) 699-6042 To those interested in donating and contributing to the success of the project, please make checks payable to: “Virginia Tech Foundation.” Also, the Foundation will provide all interested in contributing with documentation regarding tax deductibility issues.
