Dear Parents,
New Spelling Programme
‘Support for Spelling’ and ‘Letters and Sounds’
This term we are introducing a new spelling programme. It is the
Government recommended programme called ‘Support for Spelling’ which is designed to follow on smoothly from the phonics programme ‘Letters and Sounds’ which our younger children have already been following.
The programme is a short daily teaching session (20 minutes) of spelling games and activities which we hope will help the children learn spelling patterns in such a way that they will be able to transfer them to their writing.
In our school we will alternate the spelling or phonics sessions with our guided reading sessions (1 week spelling/phonics and the next week guided reading) each morning from 9.05- 9.25am, therefore it is important that your child is punctual.
This will mean that the children will not have a weekly spelling test on a Frida y
. They will still bring home words to learn, but this will be fortnightly (after their spelling week). The words may be linked to their spelling activities, but could also be high frequency words that they need regularly in their writing, or topic related words.
At Parents Evening in March we will be able to give you more information and an early indication of the impact that this programme is having.
Best Wishes
A. J. Kershaw
