CASIA Offline Handwriting Databases
The CASIA offline handwriting databases were collected by the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR),
Institute of Automation of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA) during 2007-2010. The databases contain isolated
characters and handwritten texts produced by 1,020 writers using Anoto pen. The isolated characters samples are stored
in three databases HWDB1.0~1.2, and the handwritten texts are stored in three databases HWDB2.0~2.2. There are in
total 3,895,135 character samples of 7,356 classes (7,185 Chinese characters and 171 symbols) in HWDB1.0~1.2. The
HWDB2.0~2.2 have 5,091 pages, which are segmented into 52,230 text lines and again 1,349,414 characters. All the
characters and texts are stored in gray-scale images with background eliminated. The file names are indexed by writer
numbers.
The databases are free for academic research under an agreement. Possible research tasks include handwritten
document segmentation, character recognition, text line recognition, document retrieval, writer adaptation and writer
identification. For usage, please read the following conditions carefully, fill in the application form and send back by
Fax or email (scanned PDF).
