Job Description Job title: Visits Team Member Department: Visitor Services Reporting to: Visits Manager Head of Department: Director of Visitor Services, Marketing and PR Purpose of job To welcome all visitors and to provide appropriate access, information and assistance for the benefit of their visit and safety. Main Duties 1. Welcoming visitors and making them feel valued; creating a good first impression of St Paul’s Cathedral. 2. Providing information and assistance to visitors as required; proactively interpreting the building, its history, religious significance and architectural features. 3. Attending training on historical matters, special exhibitions and events, and using the knowledge gained to respond informatively to visitors’ enquiries. 4. Escorting lost children and assisting them to be reunited with their groups/families. 5. Patrolling of Whispering, Golden and Stone Galleries, the Church Floor and Crypt in order to ensure safety and visitor conduct. 6. General security surveillance, dealing with suspicious occurrences and being alert for emergency situations and providing assistance as required 7. Assisting with the evacuation of the Cathedral in accordance with the emergency procedures 8. Assisting at special services and events with managing the public inside and outside the Cathedral 9. Staffing the fire doors during services and other performances 10. Assisting as required in Christian worship within the Cathedral 11. Altering signage as directed by senior staff 12. Escorting lost children and assisting them to be reunited with their groups/families 13. Awareness of and compliance with Chapter’s policies, including Health & Safety and Child Protection 14. Any other duties as detailed by the Visits Manager The job description is an operational document that does not form part of your contract of employment. It may be that from time to time you are expected to perform tasks that may not be expressly in the job description but are nonetheless necessary in the day to day performance of your duties. Person Specification The person selected for the post of Visits Team Member will: Have a friendly, helpful disposition and be able to relate easily to members of the public Have a good conversational manner in English, and ideally be fluent in a second language Have experience of customer service in a busy environment open to the public Be prepared to observe Cathedral rules and procedures, particularly with regard to Health & Safety regulations and emergency evacuation of the building Maintain high standards of personal appearance and behaviour appropriate to the environment of a major place of worship Be physically fit and active (eg able to climb the many staircases in the Cathedral) Have no problem with working at heights (the internal Whispering Gallery and the two external Galleries, the Stone and Golden Galleries). This also involves climbing staircases on a regular basis (530 stairs from the church floor to the Golden Gallery). Some knowledge of the sights and history of London and in particular of St Paul’s Cathedral is desirable; willingness to continue learning is expected. Terms of Employment (summary) Probationary Period Salary The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of three months (four months for Saturday Visits Team Members) Hours of Work Starting salary for a full time Visits Team Member: £16,540 per annum. Part time Visits Team Members are paid at the same rate, adjusted pro rata. Overtime is paid for any hours worked in excess of 35 per week. Salaries are paid monthly. Basic hours of work are 7 per day, excluding a lunch break of one hour. Full time staff work five days a week, which may include Saturdays and/or Sundays. Rest days will vary according to the rota. Part time Visits Team Members work one, two, three or four full days a week; the days may or may not vary over the four weeks of the rota. Saturday Visits Team Members work Saturdays only but may be requested to work additional days from time to time. The Cathedral is open seven days a week, 365 days a year. At major Christian festivals, and other times, special services and events are held outside normal working hours. Overtime is available; while it is not compulsory you will be expected to work additional hours at Easter and either Christmas or the New Year. Holiday For full time staff, 25 working days per year plus the 8 statutory holidays, to be taken by agreement with the Visits Manager. Part time Visits Team Members – pro rata. Season Ticket Loan A loan to purchase an annual season ticket is available after the probationary period. It is repayable by 10 equal monthly instalments by deduction from salary. Dress Cathedral staff uniform will be supplied and must be worn exclusively; you are expected to conform to the Visits Department’s rules concerning standards of personal appearance and hygiene. Smoking No smoking is allowed within any buildings on the Cathedral site. Disclosure and Barring Service Appointment to the post of Visits Team Member will be subject to the receipt of an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS). Possession of a criminal record will not necessarily bar an applicant from appointment and each case will be considered on its merits.
