Patient Safety in Acute Medicine Speaker Biographies Dr Kevin Cleary - Medical Director of the NPSA Joined the NPSA as Medical Director in July 2007 and leads the work of the National Reporting and Learning Service (NRLS). Since graduating from the Otago School of Medicine New Zealand he has worked as a psychiatrist and a Clinical Director in the NHS. Recently, he worked closely with the Department of Health to develop a secure inpatient unit for adolescents in West London. He continues to work one day a week as a Consultant Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatrist. Professor Derek Bell - Professor of Acute Medicine He was appointed as the first Professor of Acute Medicine in the UK, as part of Imperial College London. As the inaugural President of the Society for Acute Medicine he has been involved in developing Acute Medicine as a specialty. This includes developing the competency based training programme and establishing a multi-professional and integrated research portfolio in Acute Medicine. He graduated from Edinburgh University in 1980 and was a Lecturer in the Department of Medicine and obtained an MD on the inflammatory response to myocardial infarction. Initially specialised in Chest and General Medicine with an interest in Intensive Care and was appointed as Consultant, at Central Middlesex Hospital, London before moving to Edinburgh as a Consultant in Acute Medicine and Chest Medicine. He was Associate Medical Director for Lothian Acute Hospitals prior to taking up this post at Imperial College. Directly involved in two large national change programmes: Emergency Services Collaborative with with the Modernisation Agency and the Unscheduled Care Collaborative for the Scottish Government. Currently on several National Committees and is an elected member of council for the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. His academic research interests relate to quality and organisation of care, particularly acute medical care, and in the methods of delivery of care. Clinically his interests are illness severity assessment, pulmonary embolism and pneumonia. Dr Peter Bishop - Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Bishop has a specialist interest in vascular anaesthesia and Intensive care and High Risk Pre-operative Assessment Clinic. He has a keen interest in undergraduate education and has been appointed Undergraduate Dean within Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. Dr Virginia Craig - Associate Director in Clinical Systems Improvement Dr Craig qualified from Edinburgh University Medical School in 1987, having previously undertaken a research degree at Cambridge University. Following qualification as a doctor, she worked in a number of specialties in both secondary and tertiary care. Subsequently specialised in Palliative Medicine and became Medical Director of a small independent hospice. In 2004 she left clinical medicine to join the ‘Osprey programme’ and train as a Clinical Systems Engineer (coached by Kate Silvester and supported by Essex Strategic Health Authority). Subsequently took up the post of Associate Director in Clinical Systems Improvement at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust in June 2005. Now leads the Transformation Team which is at the forefront of delivering the Trust-wide transformation strategy. Since mid-2006, the primary means of improving services has been the application of ‘Lean’ methodology. Dr Alice Dain – Clinical Director of Medicine Dr Dain is Clinical Director of Medicine at Princess Alexandra Hospital. From 2005 she has been the consultant lead for the Emergency Assessment Unit, specialising in the diagnosis and early management of acutely ill patients, and she leads the enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team that runs a rehabilitation ward at Herts and Essex Hospital. She has interests in Cardiology in the elderly, intermediate care services, stroke and orthogeriatrics. For the first 15 years at PAH she looked after acutely ill elderly inpatients, and established outpatient and intermediate care services for patients from the Bishops Stortford area. Mr Rob Duncombe – Chief Pharmacist Registered as a pharmacist in 1990, after having studied Pharmacy at King's College London. Early career spent working in various hospitals in South East of England and in the pharmaceutical Industry. Spent 5 years working at Great Ormond Street in pharmacy manaufacturing services and quality assurance. In 2002 appointed as pharmacy operations manager at Mid Essex Hospitals, in charge of day to day management of the pharmacy department. Joined PAH in 2005 as Chief Pharmacist, and was appointed as an Associate Director in February 2006, initially for emergency services and then in September 2007 for Cancer and Core Services, while maintaining position as Chief Pharmacist. Visiting lecturer at King's College London and Leeds University. Currently the East of England Secondary care Pharmacists representative on the EofE Patient Safety Board. Key aim of this board is to improve medications safety across the East of England. Dr Mohamed Elrishi Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology Dr Elrishi has a keen interest in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates he has been appointed the role of Royal College Tutor for medicine at Princess Alexandra Hospital. He has experience in the management of all aspects of Endocrine and Diabetes care with special emphasis in reproductive endocrinology including management of diabetes during pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, male hypogonadism (lack of testosterone), and erectile dysfunction. In he has an interest in thyroid disorders, structured education (DAFNE) and insulin pump therapy for type 1 diabetics, metabolic syndrome including obesity and lipid problems. Dr John R Hurst - Clinical Senior Lecturer Respiratory Medicine Dr Hurst is Clinical Senior Lecturer Acute Medicine and Respiratory Medicine in the Academic Unit of the Royal Free Campus, London. He is undergraduate teaching lead for Acute Medicine at the Royal Free Campus.
