Mosaic With Jan Kilpatrick

Enjoy some leisure time creating a
mosaic. Learn the techniques used to fix
and finish. This ancient craft is so
versatile! Use it to turn broken plates,
tiles, glass etc into art or to add style to
your kitchen, bathroom or patio. Tools
and materials will be provided – but
bring along anything you would like to
incorporate.
Outdoor Mosaic With Jan Kilpatrick

Learn some of the secrets of outdoor
mosaicing using materials suitable for
the harsh Scottish climate. Over the two
days you will make a mosaic a
stepping stone using the reverse method
and mosaic a 3D item such as a water
font or plant pot. Materials will be
provided, but feel free to bring
broken crockery, marbles, beads, pebbles
and shells.

early! Learn to make sturdy and useful
frames and sculptures for plants and
climbers in your home and garden.
Using fundamental weaving techniques
with willow, cane and hedgerow
materials you will be able to complete at
least one article in the day. With practice
you will be able to design and construct
your own supports and ornaments.

This year we are offering the opportunity
to learn how to make a living willow
arch. You will learn the techniques
involved and prepare the sections to take
home ready to plant in good time for the
willow to take root. Time permitting you
will also be able to make a simple plant
support.
Basket Weaving with Anthea Naylor
1st July, 23rd Sept
You will spend the day learning the skills
of traditional and contemporary basketry
enabling you to make e.g. a fruit basket
from willow. Using techniques dating
back to Roman times and modern
adaptations, you will be able to finish
your basket in the day.

techniques used to create contemporary
baskets, sculptures and decorations. The
day will focus especially on creating a
random weave willow sphere or bowl.

Using willow, wire and branches you will
learn how to make a simple woven
structure. This can then be enhanced
with wool, ribbons, feathers, beads etc to
make a more complex structure. Come
and learn knotting, weaving and
decorating techniques, which are
transferable to a myriad of projects.

This exciting class gives the opportunity
for you to work together to create a
willow and tissue paper lantern. You
will learn the basic skills of construction,
and decoration, which are transferable to
other projects, e.g. sculptures, mobiles,
screens, etc. The finished lanterns are
extremely attractive ~ especially when
lit!

wood and rustic furniture enabling you to

project design.
Hand Building Ceramic Pots
With Anthea Summers

Make a large African/Greek style pot
using 'traditional' methods, such as
coiling, beating & burnishing. Develop
your hand-building techniques. Also
explore texture and pattern-making,
create dramatic effects onto slab built
cylinders, square forms, platters/suchi
plates. Using self setting New clay and
cold ceramic glazes, with the help of a
gas kiln to quicken the usually lengthy
process, to produce a finished piece or
two. You could make your own items to
glaze and fire at the next Raku class!
Smoke Fire Raku With Anthea

Raku is an exciting method of firing
ceramics using copper glazes. The
bowls, traditionally Japanese tea bowls,
are taken from the kiln glowing red and
placed in leaves / sawdust to reduce the
oxygen. Plunging them directly into
water completes the process to produce
unpredictable and often amazing results.

We will show you how to produce felt
using natural coloured fleece – direct
from the sheep. Learn the techniques
involved in carding, preparation and
felting. Design and produce your own
hat or wall hanging in this enjoyable and
productive class.
Spinning with Irene Blair
Sat 9th Sept
You will learn how to prepare the natural
coloured fleece (as above) and how to
spin it into yarn using a drop spindle and
a spinning wheel. Take your finished
yarn home to use it in projects or bring it
to the next felt class to incorporate it in
your hat or bag etc.
Batik With Jan Kilpatrick

Jan will teach you how to create batik
using textiles, wax and coloured dyes.
This versatile craft is used world wide to
create beautiful fabrics, clothes and
accessories. Jan will guide you through
the preparations, techniques and finishes
– enabling you to create your own
wonderful pieces!
Rag Rugging With Morag Nisbet
Sat 16th Sept
The process involves hooking scraps of
fabric into a Hessian background to make
exciting and colourful works of art.
Cushion covers, wall hangings, rugs,
spectacle cases, jewellery, bags, pictures,
hats – all these can be created using the
rag work techniques. A great way to
recycle old clothes and fabrics!
Autumn Textile Weaving

This is an opportunity to learn traditional
and contemporary weaving techniques.
Using a circular frame, you will learn
knotting, weaving and formal tapestry
techniques to produce an attractive wall
hanging. These skills will enable you to
undertake a great many projects in the

your body with a mild de-tox made from
locally sourced plants! Explore the Four
Winds’ site and the banks of the Water of
Leith to discover the abundant, easily
accessible, useful plants used for these
simple remedies ~ we’ll end the day by
making something like nettle soup.
Making Tinctures
With Simon Maclardie
Sat1st July.
This ever-popular class teaches you how
to make your own herbal tinctures. We
will discuss the recognition, collection
and preparation of plants along with their
properties and uses. You will have stepby-step guidance on how to make
medicinal tinctures. Bring along a half
litre of vodka and some jam jars.
Women’s Herbal with Daisy Mae

Learn how we can help ourselves in the
changes of Womanhood. The first part of
the day will involve tasting herbs and
exploring the importance of trusting our
Intuition, including discussion on how
what we eat has a dramatic affect on our
health. We will then meet the herbs in the
beautiful gardens of Four Winds and find
out how amazing these friends are in
supporting our process through the
cycles.
Creams and Ointments

This practical class will teach you how to
prepare you own cream or ointment using
locally sourced ingredients. We will
have a walk to identify and discuss the
plants, habitats, properties, uses etc and
then guide you through the process
involved.
