Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme in Liverpool.
The Wellcome Trust has funded the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool School
of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) for three Clinical PhD Programmes annually for the next
five years, starting in 2008. The topic is “Health priorities in the developing world”
and there are opportunities for gastroenterologists.







The Programme starts with one year of MRes during which the research
project is developed in detail. Thereafter a three-year MPhil/PhD research
project will be undertaken, usually overseas.
The next intake will be in August 2009, and applications will be accepted in
the New Year.
Personal remuneration is on British clinical pay scales, and personal
overseas allowances follow Wellcome Trust guidelines. Course fees are
included.
The maximum research project budget is £15,000 in Y1, and £130,000 in the
three subsequent years (subject to justification).
The Programme aims to address the serious health problems faced by
developing world countries, ranging from biomedical through to health policy
sciences.
The Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) will be
available in Year 1.
The Programme offers the opportunity for overseas placements in major
Wellcome Trust facilities in Malawi, Kenya, Thailand, VietNam, South Africa,
and Sarawak.
Applicants will be medically qualified (with five years medical training post
qualification) and will fulfil the Wellcome Trust eligibility requirements for Fellowship

We are looking for doctors training in any specialty relevant to health in the
developing world who are enthusiastic to develop a career in Clinical Science and
keen to spend time working in a developing country.

particularly the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programme In Malawi which is run
in collaboration with the local medical school.
