Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme in Liverpool. The Wellcome Trust has funded the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) for three Clinical PhD Programmes annually for the next five years, starting in 2008. The topic is “Health priorities in the developing world” and there are opportunities for gastroenterologists. The Programme starts with one year of MRes during which the research project is developed in detail. Thereafter a three-year MPhil/PhD research project will be undertaken, usually overseas. The next intake will be in August 2009, and applications will be accepted in the New Year. Personal remuneration is on British clinical pay scales, and personal overseas allowances follow Wellcome Trust guidelines. Course fees are included. The maximum research project budget is £15,000 in Y1, and £130,000 in the three subsequent years (subject to justification). The Programme aims to address the serious health problems faced by developing world countries, ranging from biomedical through to health policy sciences. The Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) will be available in Year 1. The Programme offers the opportunity for overseas placements in major Wellcome Trust facilities in Malawi, Kenya, Thailand, VietNam, South Africa, and Sarawak. Applicants will be medically qualified (with five years medical training post qualification) and will fulfil the Wellcome Trust eligibility requirements for Fellowship support (see http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/Funding/Biomedicalscience/Grants/Fellowships-and-personal-awards/WTD004435.htm ).
