Course In-charge: DR. AYMAN GHAZI AL FAYOUMI (afayoumi@kau.edu.sa) DR. HUSSAIN SINDI (u4sindi@gmail.com) Laboratory Exercises Lecturer: MR. RAHAT ULLAH KHAN (rkhan1@kau.edu.sa) Educational Objectives The main purpose the Laboratory exercises is to enable the students with enough knowledge to do practical networking for small and medium size organizations (Both wired and wireless). At the end of these exercises a student will be able to make both (Wireless and Wired) types of network and in both (Peer to Peer/ Adhoc) Modes. Laboratory Exercises Page 2 of 6 Fundamental of Data Networks Expected Outcome At the end of these Laboratory sessions, a student can take the following roles in an organization. 1. Network Technician / Lab Technician. 2. Network System Analyst. 3. Network Administrator (Wired Networks). 4. Network Administrator (Wireless Networks). 5. Network Troubleshooter. 6. Network Designer for small and medium size offices. 7. Will be prepared to take the CCNA Certification Exam. 8. Can Pass MCSE Paper 1 (MCP-Microsoft Certified Professional) 9. Network + 10.Hardware A+ Week 1(Stand Alone PC’s Software & Hardware & Network Analysis for an Organization) Purpose: Familiarization with different parts of a stand alone computer, Showing the students why is it necessary to have a Network for Data Communication? Main Theme: Showing all parts of a Stand alone PC’S. Briefing on and then installing different Application Softwares including familiarization with: 1. Computer Hardware (Different parts of Computer). 2. Computer Software (Application software and System software). 3. Network Analysis for small and medium size organizations. Week 2 (Installing Client Operating System / MCP Certification) Purpose: Installing the Client operating system (Windows XP) Preparation for MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional Exam) / MCSE-Paper 1 Main Theme: 1. To know how to install windows OS on a simple client machine. 2. Working within the GUI of Microsoft Windows XP. 3. Configuring the machine for Workgroup computing. Laboratory Exercises Page 3 of 6 Fundamental of Data Networks Week 3 – Week 4 (Devices and Equipments for The installation of a Network) Purpose: Now that we need network for Data Communication, what are the components that make a Network? Configuring OS for Network Main Theme: 1. Components of a typical Network (PCs, NICs, Resources, Devices (Hub, Switch, Router, Firewall etc)) 2. Different cables (Coaxial, Fiber optics, Twisted Pair UTP/STP CAT 5/6) 3. Interfaces and Connectors (RJ 45 etc) and Terminator. 4. Installing NICs, Configuring Operating System for Network. 5. Types of Model. Week 5 (Quiz 1) Week 6. (Client Server - Part 1) Purpose: Installing a Server operating system (Windows Server 2003) Main Theme: 1. To know how to install a Server Operating system. 2. How to configure it. 3. Installing Active Directory. Week 7. (Client Server – part 2) Purpose: Adding Users, Groups and Computers to the active directory Main Theme: 1. Checks and constraints on the users. 2. Giving different permission to the users and administrators. Laboratory Exercises Page 4 of 6 Fundamental of Data Networks Week 8 (Advance Wired Network). Purpose: How to record your PC details and connect using Hub/Switch Testing the LAN by pinging and searching the “Computers near Me” Sharing files and folders (Workgroup computing) Main Theme: 1. Briefing and Making of the: A. Straight cable. B. Crossover cable. Connecting two PCs directly Via a Crossover cable (Sharing Files/Printer sharing, drives and Resources) Network Drive Mapping. 2.
