Certification of Practical Archaeological work
All Single and Joint Honours students in Archaeology are required to undertake practical
archaeological work as part of their curriculum. This currently consists of a minimum of three weeks
approved fieldwork in first year and a total of ten further weeks field- or other practical archaeological
work in the summer vacation of second year and the Easter and Summer Vacations of third year for
students intending to take the fourth year honours option course Archaeological Fieldwork.
Students are responsible for asking their project supervisors to complete a Certification of Practical
Archaeological Work Form for each project they attend, whether this project forms part of their
compulsory fieldwork or is in addition to it. (This enables Archaeology staff both to check that the
requirement has been fulfilled and to write references for students at a future date in the full
knowledge of their practical work experience.) Forms should reach the Archaeology Secretary no
later than the first day of the Autumn Semester.
First Year students are required to submit a written report of c.1000 words on the fieldwork project
they attend. This report should be handed in to the Archaeology Secretary no later than the first day
of the Autumn Semester. Students taking the final year option, Archaeological Fieldwork, are
required to hand in two portfolios in final year based on the practical work they have undertaken in
the vacations of their second and third years.
