JOB SPECIFICATION
Post Title:
Trainee Archaeologist
Responsible to:
Project Leaders/Find and Environmental Officers
Purpose:
As a Trainee you will receive a Personal Development Log. This
defines the key skills and competencies required to attain
Archaeologist Grade, and provides space to document training
provided, certification of competence in each given skill, and a
record of professional experience gained. You will be given
training and mentoring on site from your Project Leader and other
experienced staff, as well as access to in-house training
opportunities and external training courses as deemed
appropriate. Subject to completion of the Personal Development
Log and satisfactory Employee Performance Evaluations (EPEs),
Trainees should usually acquire sufficient expertise during their
six-month probation period to fulfill the job description of
Archaeologist.
Main Activities:
(a) To assist in the successful and safe conduct of fieldwork projects, including
archaeological surveys, surface collection programmes, evaluations and excavations,
in accordance with CA procedures and recognised industry standards.
(b) To assist in the compilation of archaeological site records in accordance with CA
procedures and recognised industry standards.
(c) To assist with finds and sample processing tasks as required.
(d) To assist Project Leaders in the preparation of reports and archives for fieldwork
projects as required. To carry out such other duties commensurate with
responsibilities as Cotswold Archaeology may determine from time to time.
Personal Specification:
(a) Broad knowledge of archaeological periods, monuments and practice gained from a
degree standard, or equivalent, qualification.
(b) Capable of carrying out physically demanding outdoor work in a wide variety of
weather conditions, including undertaking manual excavation tasks using hand tools.
(c) The willingness, enthusiasm and drive to learn about all aspects of professional
archaeological practice, and to develop new skills.
(d) Good attention to detail.
(e) Ability to work to deadlines.
(f) Administrative ability in the keeping of records.
(g) The ability to deal courteously with fellow staff, clients of CA, officers of other bodies
and members of the public.
