Figurative Language Unit Completion; I can interpret metaphors and similes to understand new use of words and phrases in text. Monday/ Tuesday Alliterations- watch PowerPoint o Inclusion- 1st PowerPoint at http://languagearts.pppst.com/alliteration.html o Advanced- 2nd PowerPoint at above Discuss common alliterations/ tongue twisters Inclusion- Create a tongue twister using first and last names and illustrate General- 4 line poem using alliteration- illustrate Advanced- QR Code Quiz- Tuesday Explain to students that Amelia Bedelia takes everything literal- i.e. she doesn’t understand idioms or figurative language Read aloud Bravo, Amelia Bedelia to students Ask students to point out anywhere in the story where Amelia misunderstood what was being asked for her and have them explain what she was actually supposed to do “Illustrate an Idiom”- students will choose an idiom from any activities we have done, one they know, or one from an idiom dictionary and illustrate the literal meaning of the idiom Wednesday- Michael Ross Assembly- 1:40pm Finish “Illustrate an Idiom”- students will choose an idiom from any activities we have done, one they know, or one from an idiom dictionary and illustrate the literal meaning of the idiom and write the figurative meaning at the bottom of the illustration Personification-“Pipe up with Personification” Video & learning style activity Thursday 7 minute Figurative Language rap video- review figurative language types: http://www.schooltube.com/video/9e8b2acfc34e0ce465a3/figurativ e-language Begin culminating project for all types of figurative language with sports in groups o Partners to come up with figurative language examples for their assigned sport Partners will merge as a group of 4 to clarify and extend examples Groups will write and illustrate all examples onto a poster o Present at the end of class on Friday! Friday Vocabulary Unit 7 Assessment o Students who do not receive a C or above will join me for recess on Monday to review and study session before retaking the test in study hall on Tuesday Finish culminating project for all types of figurative language with sports in groups o Present at the end of class on Friday!
