Oil Spill Clean Up Completed at Byblos Marina The Ministry of Environment reported that the oil spill clean up operation at Byblos Marina has being completed, the next step is to work with the fishermen to clean polluted fishing boats, according to Ms Ghada Mitri, a ministry spokesperson. The Municipality of Byblos and the fishermen are working in close coordination with experts on site. Oil has being extracted from the Movenpik Marina, while some difficulties are being faced at fishermen’s wharf in Ras Beirut. The skimmer on site keeps getting clogged due to the immense amount of solid wastes combined with the oil. Free floating oil has been contained by barrier booms as precautionary measure to prevent the oil from spreading further and in preparation for its removal. In Ramlet Al Bayda, contaminated debris has been collected and the clean up of the beach is continuing as planned. Meanwhile, the clean up operation has started in Jiyeh through private a contractor and the participation of foreign experts and local NGO’s. A total of 21 contaminated sites have been identified so far, comprising a total area of 123,520 square meters, along a costal stripe stretching 19.2 km.
