Oil Spill Clean Up Completed at Byblos Marina
The Ministry of Environment reported that the oil spill clean up operation at Byblos Marina has
being completed, the next step is to work with the fishermen to clean polluted fishing boats,
according to Ms Ghada Mitri, a ministry spokesperson.
The Municipality of Byblos and the fishermen are working in close coordination with experts on
site.
Oil has being extracted from the Movenpik Marina, while some difficulties are being faced at
fishermen’s wharf in Ras Beirut. The skimmer on site keeps getting clogged due to the immense
amount of solid wastes combined with the oil.
Free floating oil has been contained by barrier booms as precautionary measure to prevent the
oil from spreading further and in preparation for its removal.
In Ramlet Al Bayda, contaminated debris has been collected and the clean up of the beach is
continuing as planned. Meanwhile, the clean up operation has started in Jiyeh through private a
contractor and the participation of foreign experts and local NGO’s.
A total of 21 contaminated sites have been identified so far, comprising a total area of 123,520
square meters, along a costal stripe stretching 19.2 km.
