Prayer preserves temperance. Prayer suppresses anger. Prayer prevents emotions of pride and envy. Prayer draws into the soul the Holy Spirit, and raises man to Heaven.” - St. Ephraem From the Dean’s desk… Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, the day on which the Lord ascended to His Father and our Father, to His God and our God. It is a wonderful opportunity to raise our hearts and mind from daily occupations and to reflect on the goal of our existence which is eternal life in God; as the opening prayer of the Mass relates: “for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope”. It is also a good time to reflect on the missionary nature of the Church and our place within that mission to the world. To ask ‘how do I share in Christ’s mission in the world? That mission into which I was baptised and which I share as an adopted son or daughter of God?’ Sometimes this mission may seem beyond us, but we are not left alone. In a few days’ time we come to celebrate Pentecost and the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, and through them to the Church. During this time, between the feasts of the Ascension and Pentecost, let us pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (the ability to judge how best to act), Fortitude (the virtue of the martyrs that allows them to suffer death than to renounce the Faith), Knowledge (to see the circumstances of our life as God sees them and in accordance to his will), Piety (to go beyond a sense of duty, to worship and serve God out of love) and Fear of the Lord (the desire not to offend God out of love for Him) We ask for these gifts of the Holy Spirit, in order that we may show forth the fruits of the Holy Spirit in our lives: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self-Control, Chastity which reach their perfection as virtues in heaven. Do try and pray this week for renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit on you, your family and our parish. You may have noticed a change on the music front at Our Lady of Pity over the past few weeks. It was with sadness that Marg Beddow, after a lot of thought, has decided to retire from playing and organising the music for the Saturday evening Mass. Marg has been playing the organ at Our Lady of Pity since the church was opened and has achieved (I believe) 52 years of service for which as a community we are extremely grateful. I am sure we will be able to thank Marg in a proper way in a few weeks’ time – but for now we just say ‘THANK YOU MARG!’ We remember in our prayers Arnold York and Peter Parker both of whom have died recently. Arnold York’s funeral will be at 4pm on Tuesday 19th May at the Crematorium. Peter Parker’s Requiem Mass will be held at the Cathedral at 12.15pm on Friday 22nd May, followed by a committal at the Crematorium. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. The Rosary is being said at Our Lady of Pity Church during May at 9.10am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, before the 9.30am Mass. CAFOD 20-week draw Week 15 £10 prize No.4 J Johnson Events and Mass Time Changes for May Pentecost Sunday (23rd – 24th May) There will be an all night Pentecost Vigil in the Cathedral (from Saturday 23rd May at 7.30pm until 8am on Sunday 24th May). Do come and pray for a period of time before the Blessed Sacrament for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit into our hearts and into the parish, the diocese and universal Church. Bishop Mark will celebrate the 10.45am Mass in the Cathedral and the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Cathedral at 3pm. Because of these events (and the fact that Shrewsbury clergy are supporting Oswestry and on occasion Whitchurch) the Masses at St Winefride’s on the 24th May will be at 9am. And as is customary there will be no evening Mass at 6pm on Pentecost Sunday 24th May as that congregation is invited to support and pray for the Confirmation Candidates and their families at the 3pm Mass (which replaces the evening Mass). Thank you for your generosity and understanding. Canon Jonathan BAPTISMS IN THE PARISH It is always a joy when parents enquire about the possibility of having their child baptised and I want our parish to be especially welcoming to all who come seeking to nurture their faith and receive the sacraments. However, as priests and deacons we cannot simply baptise infants because a parent phones Cathedral House to request baptism and book a date. The law of the Church in Canon 868 §2 states “For an infant to be baptised lawfully it is required: that there be a realistic hope that the child will be brought up in the Catholic Religion. If such hope is truly lacking, the baptism is, in accordance with the provisions of particular law, to be deferred and the parents advised for the reason for this.” In accordance with this Canon, any parent wishing to have a child baptised must start practising their Catholic Faith and start attending Mass BEFORE any discussion of baptismal dates occurs. If parents are returning to Shrewsbury for a baptism then a letter from their local Parish Priest will be required, stating that they regularly attend Mass in their local parish. This is not a refusal to baptise any child, but a request for a response and a commitment from the parents who will be the first teachers of their child in the ways of faith, and will be promising (with Godparents) to raise that child as a member of the Catholic Faith and to nurture their child’s faith by their own example. Please keep all our families practising and non-practising in your prayers.
