Carsten holds a M.Sc., in Biology (Tropical Ecology) from the University of Berlin in Germany, and has some 13 years
experience in the environment sector. His first assignment in Indonesia was in 1993, and since then has worked on some
17 relevant assignments in Indonesia, and is therefore fully familiar with the AMDAL process in Indonesia, along with
other Indonesia government environmental regulations and procedures.
He is currently working on one of the ADB funded Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Support Project (ETESP)
packages as the Environment Specialist and also worked on the Inter Island Transport Project (ADB SSTA 4429-INO) in
the country, he has prepared Initial Environmental Examinations (IEE) and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA’s) in
accordance with applicable Indonesian standards, and in line with ADB requirements. In total, has prepared about 20
rapid environmental assessments, IEEs and EIAs to ADB standards, for projects up to several ten million dollars in value.
He has a good command of Bahasa Indonesian and is able to hold a technical discussion and give presentations in the
language.

communities. Project and staff management (7 domestic consultants). Technical and progress reporting, resultoriented project evaluation. As part of the ecotourism capacity building programs, the consultant also developed
strategies and plans for sustainable resources usage on village level in Indonesia. For the community of Sungai
Kecil, Bintan Utara, a sustainable pandan handicraft workshop facility was developed and built as a 'Gotong
Royong' initiative by the villagers. This was linked to a sustainable pandan planting program to support the
village handicraft industry.
