Relating to: declaring the week of November 5, 2007 Wisconsin Bookworms Week in
state/county/city
Whereas, reading to young children helps them develop a love of reading along
with an enthusiasm for learning; and
Whereas, children from families with limited incomes may not have the
opportunity to own many books; and
Whereas, there is considerable evidence of a relationship between reading
regularly to a child and that child’s later reading achievement (National Research
Council, 1998); and
Whereas, children who are read to frequently are nearly twice as likely as other
children to show three or more skills associated with emerging literacy (U.S. Department
of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Education); and
Whereas, parents stated that Wisconsin Bookworms™ provides a variety of free
books, activity sheets and someone to read the free books to their children and they do
not get these items anywhere else or from anyone else; and
Whereas, the people in the STATE/COUNTY/CITY recognize the importance of
reading to children at an early age; and
Whereas, the people of the STATE/COUNTY/CITY recognize the uniqueness of
the Wisconsin Bookworm™ project and it’s partners UW-Extension, the Wisconsin
Association for Home & Community Education and Wisconsin Public Television; and
Whereas, Wisconsin Bookworms™ is celebrating its 10th-year of reading with
over 375,000 free books distributed statewide; therefore be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring/COUNTY BOARD/CITY
COUNCIL/GOVERNOR That the XXX hereby declares the week of November 5
Wisconsin Bookworms™ Week.
