Poetry is an art form that uses colorful words to paint images in our heads. It is important to know the definition of the words that are in poems to get the full picture. Greek and Latin roots help us to figure out what a word means, they are useful in our ultimate understanding of material, and they help to expand our vocabulary. It will be up to you to find the Greek and Latin roots, create a list of words, and then you will create your own poem using new words you have discovered.
In order to complete this WebQuest, you will need to accomplish the following tasks:

Find the definition of some Greek and Latin Roots.

Create a list of 20 words using Greek and Latin Roots.

Investigate different forms of poetry.

Create your own piece of poetry using one of the forms that you researched and some of your words from the list you created with Greek and Latin roots.

The first step to your WebQuest is to find the definition of Greek and Latin Roots. o Write down the roots and their definitions that interest you.

Now you need to create a list of words from the roots, 20 different roots must be used.
o First, write down ten words that you can think of formed from the different roots.
Use your own brain on the first ten! o After coming up with ten words on your own, if you need help thinking of more words, you may use a reference to complete the list.

The next step is to investigate different forms of poetry. o Look at many different kinds before selecting your favorite.

Now, create a poem using your favorite form. Make sure to add some of the Greek or
Latin based words from your list.

There are many, different Types of Poetry . Which one is your favorite?

The larger range of vocabulary one has, the more information they will be able to understand. By using the roots definitions, definitions are much easier to obtain and our vocabulary should increase. Hopefully you saw how many words in our vocabulary could be dissected and broken into Greek or Latin roots.
Poetry is also an amazing art form that uses a wide range of vocabulary. In order to understand what an author is trying to express one must be able to understand the words being used.
Hopefully you saw the range of forms that a poet has to work with, have a new found appreciation for the different poems of poetry, and will feel compelled to tryout the different forms on your own.
*** I determined that the websites I used were trustworthy sites because the majority of sites I used were .org or educational based sites. The only exception was the “Types of
Poetry” website which had great examples of different forms of poetry. I knew that they were trustworthy because of my studies of poetry.
