Our back to back Specialties were super and
I’d like to thank everyone for all their hard
work leading up to and right through the days
of the shows. It’s truly a combined effort and
I think our club members do an outstanding
job! Each year our show is better & better,
from the fabulous bagels & hospitality table,
beautiful trophies, fantastic raffle, friendly
atmosphere, great judges and of course all
the wonderful dogs! Kudos to all!
JSLRC also supported the Morris & Essex
Kennel Club show with beautiful crystal
trophies….unfortunately I think I forgot to
coordinate getting the trophies to the show,
so while we had lovely, pressed tablecloths,
we didn’t have the trophies to go on them!
Fortunately we were able to get the trophies
to their rightful owners at the MJLRC
specialties, so it was a happy ending 
Our annual elections took place in
September. I’d like to thank Ann DeGraw for
her service to the club the past couple years
and welcome Sherri Mattheis as our new
Secretary, Donna Sevchuk will move to
Director, otherwise the board is the same.
We do have a number of new members, I
hope you will all become involved in the club,
I know Fran Pidgeon has plans for those
folks interested in Rally, CGC and perhaps
Agility.
Our Holiday Party is quick approaching, it’s
Wednesday, December 1st. The flyer is on
the club website as well as in this newsletter.
Please contact Eve and let her know what
delicious goodies you’ll be bringing…the
food is always outstanding and the music
great! Don’t forget a raffle item and a
wrapped doggie grab bag…one of the
highlights of the night! I’m looking forward to
seeing you all there!
Just a couple other things coming up I’ll
mention quickly. January we will once again
host the Labrador booth at Lehigh Valley’s
Canine Learning Experience. Anyone
interested in helping should contact Sherri
Mattheis. We have also confirmed Sunday,
Feb 6th as the date for our Winter Health
Clinic. It will be held at Blairstown AH,
details will be posted on the website as soon
as they’re finalized.
Well, I think that’s it for now. See you all in a
couple weeks!
Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving!
Donna

JSLRC BACK TO BACK SPECIALTIES
Well folks, we’ve done it again……had a great specialty show. This year our entry doubled from last year.
The weather was decent and the grounds were terrific.
All of this would not have been possible without the help of Laura Dedering who was my untiring backup.
In fact, after four years I am stepping down from the job of Specialty Coordinator and passing it on to
another club member.
I want to thank Laura for all her hard work. Ann DeGraw for her work on the trophy committee. Donna
Sevchuk for her work on the hospitality. Donna was also my sounding board whenever I needed it. Cory
Anger for her fantabulous(is that a word?) raffle table. It’s a lot of work for the two days and trying to enjoy
the show at the same time. Quite a juggling act. Donna Forte who was always there as President I could
call or email her any time of day. She and Steph Forte picked up the slack whenever necessary. No matter
what had to be done they were there to do it if necessary. Our equipment people for setting up everything
on the day of the show and taking it down again and carting it away for next year. Laura Jennings for the
beautiful ring decorations. Mickey Beerman for the grrrreat Brooklyn Bagels each morning and so many
different kinds of cream cheese I couldn’t believe the flavors. Laurie Muirhead for the great job she always
does on the Judges’ gifts. To all the members who stayed and helped clean up our area before they left for
home. Thank you all that is so important to know that you are there to help. .
I also want to say a very special thank you to Cathy Murch for her help all year with the coordination
between JSLRC and Newton KC which was very smooth because of her; and to Frank Murch who made sure
that our site was setup perfect for us and always kept checking to see that we were supplied with whatever
we needed and drove judges and stewards back and forth and anything else we needed.
Thank you all very much. See you all next year………as an exhibitor yea!!!!!!

Canine Influenza
by Dr. Jean Hofve, DVM
Reprinted from Only Natural Pet Store
http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/default.aspx
Yes, dogs can get the flu, but fortunately not the H1N1 virus that’s been getting so much attention lately.
Similar to the human form, canine flu is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs which is thought to be a
mainly airborne virus, most likely transmitted by an infected dog coughing or sneezing on another. In
otherwise healthy dogs, statistics show that the canine flu is a fairly mild disease with most dogs recovering
completely in two to three weeks.
The canine influenza virus (CIV) was first noted in greyhounds about 5 years ago. CIV appeared quite
dangerous at the time, with many deaths (now known to be due to secondary pneumonia arising from the
conditions in which the greyhounds lived and worked). In the vast majority of dogs CIV produces only mild,
self-limiting respiratory signs: coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and fever, for up to 3 weeks. It is similar to
kennel cough in that antibiotics do not affect the course of the disease.
The canine flu is very contagious; and like human flu, it is most contagious during the 2-4 day incubation
period before signs of illness appear, making prevention difficult. It is typically found in shelters, kennels,
and other facilities where many dogs (especially puppies) are housed together.
A vaccine against CIV recently received conditional approval. However, again like human flu vaccines, it
does neither prevents infection nor prevents symptoms. At best, it may reduce the severity and duration of
illness, and it may reduce viral shedding by an infected dog. Because it is a killed vaccine, a 2-shot series is
required, with 2-4 weeks between inoculations. Immunity develops slowly; so the vaccine doesn’t really
take effect until 3-4 weeks after the first shot. Giving the vaccine after a dog has been exposed to the virus
is therefore useless.
The CIV vaccine is considered non-core, and vaccination is not recommended for most dogs. Some boarding
kennels are requiring vaccination for CIV; such requirements are not based on science, but on fear. CIV
spreads through respiratory secretions and contaminated objects (kennel surfaces, food and water bowls,
collars and leashes), and by people moving between infected and uninfected dogs without using proper
precautions. The virus remains alive and infectious on surfaces for up to 48 hours, on clothing for 24 hours,
and on hands for 12 hours. Good hygiene and isolation of infected dogs will limit, if not eliminate,
transmission.
CIV, like many other viruses, is most likely to infect young puppies, and older dogs who already have other
health problems. The best defense is a healthy immune system—that is, one that is well supported with
great nutrition, appropriate exercise, and good stress management.
