All Owners/Operators of Propane Bulk Storage Containers

RE:
DEADLINE FOR RETROFITTING BULK STORAGE CONTAINERS
Liquefied petroleum gases are gases which are composed predominately of any of the
following: propane, LP gas, bottled gas, butane, butylenes, propylene (including MAPP gas).
Your facility is listed with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services,
Bureau of LP Gas Inspections, as having liquefied petroleum gas bulk storage on your site, and
is part of our inspections program. This bulletin is to advise you of changes in code
requirements for any liquefied petroleum gas container of 4,000 gallons water capacity or
larger.
No later than July 1, 2011, all existing propane containers over 4,000 gallons water capacity
must be retrofitted with an internal valve equipped for remote closure and automatic shutoff
using thermal actuation. All new containers must be equipped with this feature at the time of
installation. While this deadline may seem to be far in the future, retrofitting a large container
with this valve requires the tank to be emptied before the work can be done. The larger the
tank, the more time consuming this will be. If you have not already done so, we recommend
you contact your gas supplier as soon as possible for information concerning this retrofit.
THIS WORK MUST BE CONDUCTED BY A COMPANY LICENSED THROUGH THE
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND CONSUMER SERVICES, BUREAU OF LP
GAS INSPECTIONS.
If you have any questions, please contact our office at 850/921-8001.
