Review of Basic English for ESL
Catalog Description:
149J- Continuation of Review of Basic English
3 units
A continuation of a comprehensive review of the structure of the simple English sentence; short
writing assignments; reading fiction and nonfiction; reinforces fluency in reading and writing.
Prerequisite: A grade of pass in ESL 149I. 3 hours. [Typical contact hours: 54]
Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course, the student should be able to:
1. use simple present and present continuous verb tenses
2. form affirmative statements, negative statements and questions using appropriate
auxiliary verbs in simple present and present progressive tenses
3. demonstrate understanding of the unique role of the verb be
4. use common terms in metalanguage that describes English grammar
5. demonstrate understanding of the structure of an English sentence, including syntactic
conventions of simple sentences and questions;
6. use adverbs of frequency in the correct location in a sentence
7. identify the main idea and supporting examples in a reading
8. organize a paragraph with a topic sentence followed by supporting ideas
9. demonstrate the process and purpose of multiple draft writing
10. proofread a text for errors
Expected Outcomes for Students:
1. use simple past, past continuous and future verb tenses while retaining working
knowledge of present verb tenses
2. know English irregular past tense verb forms
3. distinguish between verbs and modals such as can and will
4. form affirmative statements, negative statements and questions using appropriate
auxiliary verbs in present and past
5. use appropriate forms of possessive adjectives, prepositions of time and place, and
pronouns: subject, object, possessive and demonstrative
6. identify the main idea and supporting examples in a reading
7. employ a system to edit own writing
8. increase vocabulary via readings related to students’ field of work
Course Content:
1. Simple Past, Past Continuous and Future verb tenses while retaining working
knowledge of present verb tenses
2. English irregular past tense verb forms
3. The differences between verbs and modals such as can and will
4. Affirmative statements, negative statements and questions using appropriate auxiliary
verbs in present and past
5. Word forms of possessive adjectives, prepositions of time and place, and pronouns:
subject, object, possessive and demonstrative pronoun forms
6. Identifying the main idea and supporting examples in a reading
7. Editing own writing which contains grammatical errors
8. Reading selections from non-fiction, novels and textbooks related to the students’
occupations
9. Vocabulary selected from readings related to their field of work

Typical Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical Assignments
a. Write one paragraph on a topic with the main idea in the first line and supporting details
following it. Revise the paragraph to make the organization clear and to eliminate irrelevant
sentences that don’t lend support. Proofread it to correct grammar and punctuation. Hand in
all three drafts to the teacher in a green exam booklet.
b. Read a one-page selection from a textbook for native English speakers. Identify the
author’s main idea and ideas or examples that support it.
