Global Warming 1 Running Head: GLOBAL WARMING Global Warming Global Warming 2 Background of Global Warming Global Warming refers to “rising the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere due to the effect of greenhouse gases” like, carbon dioxide. Global warming is when the earth heats up. It happens when, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane trap heat increases the temperature of earth (Houghton, 2004). Causes of Global Warming There are several reasons behind the global warming. For example, the different types of green house gases are the main reasons of the global warming. Carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrous oxide are the main green house gases (Maslin, 2007). These gases increase the temperature of earth. Hence, the excessive emission of these gases is the major cause of global warming. In addition, power plants are another reason of global warming. For instance, these power plants produce large amount of carbon dioxide for the purpose of electricity generation (Houghton, 2004). On the other hand, constructions of the commercial and residential buildings are also a source of global warming pollution. It is because constructions of these building require a lot of fuel that emits a large amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (Silverstein, 2009). Hence, Global Warming 3 carbon dioxide gas increases the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere. Deforestation is one of the biggest causes of global warming. For example, human beings uses of forests for fuel. Greater urbanization, requirement of land for factories and buildings, requirement of timber are all reasons that are leading to deforestation, which in turn is leading to global warming (Oxlade, 2006). Arguments in favor of Global Warming There are several facts about the global warming. The first fact about the global warming is that the global warming is caused by the green houses gases. In addition, because of global warming the earth’s atmosphere is getting more unpredictable with heavy rains in the areas (Houghton, 2004). The global warming is also responsible for the introduction of some new diseases. Global warming leads to increase in earth surface temperature. The effect of global warming is very evident on the animal kingdom also. Some animals have become extinct due to loss of their natural habitat or their inability to evolve to the rapid changes in the climate (Maslin, 2007). The effect of global warming can be felt on seasons too. There is shift in season cycle, as the summers are getting longer than the winters. Global warming is also affecting to the crop production. Global warming is also affecting to the entire ecosystems (Silverstein, 2009). In addition, it should also be noted down that it also changes the natural climate and life of the human beings. It also increases the average temperature of the earth. Along with this, Global warming also changes the global climate. Global warming includes higher or lowers agricultural yields. Global Warming affects sea levels worldwide. The rate of warming is also increasing. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been increasing with an average 01.8 ppm per year (Oxlade, 2006). Global Warming 4 The biggest fact about the global warming is that, it negatively influences the life of human beings. For instance, Climate change is changing the economy, health and communities in diverse ways. In addition, earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C (Maslin, 2007). So, the green house gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are playing hazards in the present times. These green house gases trap heat in earth’s atmosphere and thus result in increasing the temperature of earth. Global warming directly or indirectly affect to the ecosystem and bio-system worldwide (Oxlade, 2006). Arguments Against of Global Warming According to the scientists of this opposing group, human being has a small share in enhancing global temperatures and climatic change. In regard to issue, different claims and counter-claims have developed with different beliefs. As per their beliefs, activities of human beings only add a small part of carbon dioxide emissions that have a little impact on climate, as oceans absorb most of additional CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions (Weart, 2008). In addition, natural reasons or factors of global warming are present, but they are required to maintain the ideal balance in the Earth climate. According to this group, the natural causes observe the sunlight and assist in ensuring the earth warm for human beings to stay alive. Without these natural causes or factors, the earth would much colder and not appropriate for human inhabitation. Moreover, it can be said that large quantity of CO2 (carbon dioxide) cause to a “greening” of the Earth, as plants can make use of the additional carbon dioxide to fasten their growth.
