Course Description: This course covers descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive portion
analyzes data through graphs, measures of central tendency and spread. Other statistical practices
utilize basic probability, binomial and normal distributions, estimation of population parameters,
hypothesis testing, linear regression and correlation. Analytical reading and problem solving are
required for success in this course. This course meets district G.E. requirements. Associate Degree &
transfer to CSU (CAN STAT 2) and private colleges and universities. CSU General Education;
IGETC UC, Transfer Course List :Mathematics (MATH) 119 combined with Biology (BIOL) 200 or
Psychology (PSYC) 258: maximum credit, one course.
This particular Online Course is designed to introduce students to basic statistical concepts. The
stress will be on understanding when to use which technique rather than just crunching numbers
through formulas. Use of a computer and knowledge of ‘Window’s’ based applications is a
requirement since calculations will be done using Statdisk or DDXL- an add-on to the Excel
Spreadsheet Program.
It is required that the student registers into the Course Compass Online Package -access key is bundled with the textbook—
Course Format: Each week the student is required to perform the following
four tasks:
1. Read the text sections assigned, watch the video, do weekly assigned homework
covering each section
2. Complete the pretest assigned on the section material
3. attend a virtual classroom where we will go over the questions on the pretest
4. take a weekly exam on the sections covered that week
All students are required to purchase the textbook and register in
Course Compass All homework, pretests, virtual classes and
weekly exams including the final are completed in Course
Compass.
Prerequisite: Math 96 or equivalent with a grade of "C" or better.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course the student, with the aid of the computer where appropriate,
will be able to:
1. Evaluate means and standard deviations of both grouped and individual item samples.
2. Evaluate probabilities using the definition, the multiplication formula, the addition formula, and
counting procedures.
3. Evaluate probabilities using the Normal Distribution tale and the Binomial Distribution Table.
4. Evaluate probabilities of Sampling Distributions (both Binomial and non-Binomial).
5. Construct confidence intervals of means using large and small samples of proportions, and of
variances.
6. Determine sample size when estimating means and proportions.
7. Do hypothesis testing of means, proportions, and variances (one and two sample problems).
8. Evaluate Correlation and use it to predict in a Regression model.
Homework: The student is expected to read each section assigned in the text and watch the video of
each chapter’s material in the Course Compass program. Their will be assigned homework in Course
Compass covering each section of assigned text material. This homework will be graded and will
account for 15% of the student’s final grade assessment. The homework is expected to be
completed in the week assigned and will be due no later than one week after the
assigned date.
Tests: There will be a weekly online exam in Course Compass covering the text material assigned for
the given week. Students are expected to complete the exams, without the assistance of another
individual and in the time allotted for each exam. If an exam is not submitted in the time allotted it
will be assigned a grade of zero. Exams for the week will be posted on Saturday each week and
must be completed by Monday evening 11:55 p.m.
Virtual Classroom: A weekly pretest will be posted in Course Compass. Students are encouraged
to complete this pretest as it will serve as a model for the weekly exam . A weekly
Virtual Classroom will be held where a discussion will take place involving the pretest and homework
for the week.
Discussion Board: Students are encouraged to use the Discussion Board in Course Compass to ask
questions regarding the course material.
Attendance: All students are required to officially enroll in the course and pay the appropriate fees .
Failure to complete the registration process in a timely manner will result in a student being excluded
from taking this course for the current semester.
Academic Accommodation: Any student who may need an academic accommodation should discuss
the situation with me during the first two weeks.
