Syllables Definitions

The students learn that every syllable has to have a vowel in it. If it is the vowel

“e” at the end of a sentence, that does not count as a syllable. Moreover, a “y” at the beginning of a word stands as a consonant; therefore, it cannot be a vowel.

1.

Closed syllable (VC) is a syllable that has a short vowel sound closed in by a consonant, a team of consonants, or a consonant cluster (three consonants together):

Examples ~ a) cap ~ the letter “a” has its short sound because the “p” closes it off from saying the long “a” sound ( /a/ ) b) stick ~ the letter “i” has its short sound because the consonant team “ck” closes it off from saying the long /i/ c) in/sect ~ the letter “i” in the first syllable is closed because the

“n” closes the “I” off from saying its long sound. Moreover, the “e” in the second closed syllable “sect” has its short sound because of the “ct” after it.

2.

Open syllable (V) is a syllable that is not closed in by a consonant or a team/cluster of consonants.

Examples ~ a) hi ~ the “i” has its long sound because there are no consonants after it to stop it from saying the long /i/ b) zero ~ the “e” in the first syllable has its long sound because there are no consonants after it to stop it from saying the long /e/.

Moreover, the “o” in the second syllable has its long sound for the same reason.

3.

Magic E syllable (VCE) is a syllable that contains a single vowel followed by a single consonant then an “e”. An “e” at the end of a word is very rarely heard; it has one very important job.

Examples ~

a) wave ~ the “magic e” jumps over the consonant before it and makes the preceding vowel say its name (long sound). b) picture ~ the “ture” in the second syllable contains a “magic e” that jumps the “r” and makes the preceding vowel say its long sound (name).

4.

R-Controlled Syllable ( VR ) is a syllable that has a vowel followed by an “r”

Example ~ a) farm ~ the “a” is controlled by the “r” b) stern ~ the “e” is controlled by the “r” c) girl ~ the “i” is controlled by the “r” d) storm ~ the “o” is controlled by the “r” e) turn ~ the “u” is controlled by the “r”

5.

Vowel Team Syllable ( VV ) is a syllable containing vowel teams such as: ea, ie, ee, ai, ay, oa, ue, oe, ow or example.

Examples ~ a) oatmeal ~ “oa” and “ea” syllable types b) display ~ (“dis” - closed syllable) play - “ay” c) proclaim ~ (“pro” - open syllable) claim - “ai” d) esteem ~ (“es” - closed syllable) teem - “ee”

6.

Consonant -le Syllable (-CLE) is a final syllable of a multisyllable word consisting of a consonant followed by an “L” then a silent “e”

Examples ~ a) able ~ (“a” - open syllable) “ble” consonant -le syllable b) apple ~ (“ap” - closed syllable) “ple” consonant -le syllable c) marble ~ (“mar” -R controlled syllable) “ble” consonant -le syllable
