Abstract:
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History began to sponsor educational programs
shortly after its founding in 1895. By the 1920’s, the “Section of Public Education” was
providing tours and classes and reaching local schools with the Loan Collection. The
Division of Education (DOE,) as it exists today, was organized in 1975. It continues to
conduct classes and tours for adults, children and families, and the DOE also produces
numerous publications and organizes special events; its work enhances the Museum
experience of many visitors each year.
Acquisition Information:
Records created in the course of normal museum activities and will continue to be held
by the Division of Education.

History:
Educational programs have been an integral feature of The Museum for nearly its
entire existence. As early as 1927, the Section of Education held classes, loaned
traveling exhibits of Museum specimens and photos, provided lectures for adults and
children, provided tours for some 25,710 students and also sponsored “moving pictures”
for the public. The current organizational incarnation of the Division of Education (as it
was renamed) took shape in 1975. The DOE has expanded greatly throughout the years,
adding new classes, events and programs to its roster. The Division’s influence has
become increasingly visible throughout The Museum. They train the teen docents who
work in exhibit halls, staff “touchable” carts, make presentations and lead children’s
activities. Activity sheets, brochures, and other publications produced by the DOE
“create indelible impressions on the viewer” and complement The Museum’s various
events and exhibits. In the last 20 years, the DOE has been active in the openings of
major exhibits such as Polar World (1983,) The Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt (1990,)
The Hall of African Wildlife (1993,) and The Alcoa Foundation Hall of Native
Americans (1996.) Additionally, the DOE has had a strong presence in two other
successful additions to The Museum: the Discovery Room (opened in 1989) and the
Bonehunter’s Quarry (opened in 1999.)
Outreach programs are another important aspect of the DOE’s history. The Loan
Collection, a long-running feature of The Museum, reached an audience of over 96,000
people in 2002. Museum on the Move (begun in 1982,) In-School Programs (begun in
1976,) and Science on Stage (begun in 1995) also take Museum artifacts and knowledge
out into the community. At home in the CMNH, the DOE also offers a wide range of
classes for school groups, home-schooled students, families, adults, and other groups.
Additionally, the overnight program, which began in 1997, gives many types of groups
the opportunity to learn by spending a night in The Museum. These classes and programs
reach many thousands of area residents annually.
The DOE also coordinates and contributes to special events at The CMNH. Events such
as Earthweek Activities, Wildlife Film Festivals, The Natural World Photo Contest
(NWPC) and Member’s Nights have been held with regularity for 20 years or more; the
2
NWPC has been held for over 40 years. In recent years, the DOE has aided in events
such as Bioblitz, Biodiversity Blockparty, The Gem & Mineral Show, and No Big Kids
Allowed Day. Coordinated by DOE Chair Diane Grzybek and supported by DOE staff
and volunteers, the special events of 2002 drew over 10,000 participants.
Material taken from: The 31st Annual Report of The Carnegie Museum, for the Year
Ending June 30, 1928; Celebrating the First 100 Years of The Carnegie in Pittsburgh,
1895-1995 by Agnes Dodds Kinard; The 2002 Annual Report of the Carnegie Museum
of Natural History.
Scope and Content Notes:
This collection contains photographs, slides, brochures, fliers, posters and other ephemera
from the Division of Education at The Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The
collection dates from the year 1929 until the year 2003, with the bulk of the material
coming from the years 1970-1995. The major series represent the three main formats of
the collection (photographs, slides and brochures;) the sub-series refer to the main areas
the collection relates to within The CMNH (Education Department and Programs,
Events, Exhibits and Powdermill.)
Of particular interest are the Education History and Museum History files in Series 1,
Sub-Series 1. The former holds pictures dating from 1929-1960 of the Junior Naturalists
Club, while the latter contains photographs pertaining to Baron de Bayet and Earl
Douglass, two important names in the museum field. Museum History also contains
photographs of “Dated American Indians,” which reveal old stereotypes found in Native
American-related displays and educational programs. Within Sub-Series 3 of the
Photographs Series, there are extensive files on Arctic Life and Native Americans. Also
of note are the folders of Egypt and Polar World, which contain pictures documenting the
openings of The Walton Hall of Egypt and Polar World, respectively.
Series 2 contains approximately 3,500 slides; there are large numbers of slides that
document children’s classes and museum tours in Sub-Series 1. Sub-Series 2, Events, is
the smallest and perhaps most incomplete of the Slides Series, and primarily documents
events from the 1980’s and 1990’s. In Sub-Series 3 there are slides of several old and
temporary exhibits, such as “Deadline for Wildlife” and “Vikings.” Additionally, slides
of old “halls,” including Hobby Hall, Marine Hall and Transportation Hall provide a
glimpse into The CMNH of over 30 years ago.
Series 3, Brochures contains a wide range of materials, including brochures,
fliers, invitations, activity books and worksheets, and posters. Sub-Series 1 contains
complete sets of brochures for Classes and Programs, as well as School Programs, from
the early 1980’s until the present day. Sub-Series 3 has documents relating to nearly 50
exhibits; of note is the Guidebook to “We Humans,” a 1955 exhibit on cultures.
Conservation Note: Many of the photographs are curling, as a result of their previous
storage; however, the majority of documents in this collection are in sound condition.

Series Description:
Series 1: Photographs
Series 1 contains photographs (both black and white and color) and negatives
of the DOE and its programs, special events, exhibits, and activities at Powdermill
Nature Reserve (PNR.) Thirteen oversized photos of Dinosaurs and Polar World are
housed in a separate box, located in the outer hallway cabinets. The 17 negatives in the
“Fossil Invertebrates” folder (Sub-Series 3) have corresponding slides in the “Fossil
Invertebrates” category of Series 2, Sub-Series 3. “Obsolete Staff Photos” mainly houses
photos of former staff, but there are also some photos of current staff. The
“Miscellaneous Temporary Exhibits” file was designed to hold older exhibits for which
there are only a small number of photos; the same rationale follows for “Miscellaneous
Special Events.” The “Science on Stage” folder contains only contact sheets and
negatives- no photos. The Series dates from 1929- 2002, with the bulk of material falling
in the 1980’s & 1990’s. It is arranged alphabetically by subject heading within four SubSeries and is housed in the bottom two drawers of the file cabinet in front of Matt
Phillips’ office.
Series 2: Slides
Series 2 originally contained 4,685 slides; through appraisal it was reduced to
approximately 3,500. Slides deemed too dark or otherwise unusable were discarded, as
were multiple images (when possible, at least two copies of the same shot were retained.)
It contains slides of the DOE and its programs, special events, exhibits, and activities at
PNR. In the “Tours” pages of Sub-Series 1 there are slides of handicapped visitors and
two nearly identical sets of the pre-visit slide program (they are not identical due to
changes that were made to the program over time.) The category of “Generic Children
Shots” was designed to house recent slides that are non-activity or date specific; also
included here, though, are slides from “Bug Out with Marsha Plotkin,” a special event of
the mid-1990’s. Several of the categories in Sub-Series 3: Exhibits (such as “Egypt” and
“Geology, Gems and Minerals”) contain slides of the exhibits as well as visitors looking
at the exhibits. The Series dates from the 1960’s- 2003, with the bulk falling in the
1980’s & 1990’s. The Slides are arranged alphabetically by subject heading within four
Sub-Series and are housed in the top shelf of the right-hand file cabinet in Peter
Farkasovsky’s office.
Series 3: Brochures
Series 3 contains brochures, fliers, invitations, activity books and worksheets,
evaluation sheets, teacher’s guides, information sheets, posters and other assorted
ephemera and publications. These documents relate to the DOE and its programs,
special events, exhibits, and activities at PNR. The “Miscellaneous Exhibit
4
Publications” category contains publications on special themes and animals from
the 1970’s- the 1990’s, as well as Museum “calendars” from 1980. The “Scientific
Preparation and Research” folder houses the “Stepping Stones to Knowledge” brochures
from the 1980’s (?) Teacher’s guides for PNR activities are housed in the “Teacher’s
Guides” folder in order keep the guides together. Sub-Series 4: Posters, which contains
posters of The CMNH and specific exhibits, is located in two separate containers in the
outer hallway cabinets. The Series dates from 1950-2004, with the bulk falling in the
1980’s. The Brochures are arranged alphabetically by subject heading within five SubSeries and are housed in the second and bottom shelves of the right-hand file cabinet in
Peter Farkasovsky’s office.
Organization of the Collection:
The photographs and brochures of the Division of Education at The Carnegie Museum of
Natural History are housed in four file cabinet drawers and divided into three major series
(each with four to five sub-series,) as follows.
