Summer 2012
Here we are in the slow-down season for most of our Chapters! I hope you are catching up on all the exciting
projects and outreach projects you started during the year OR maybe you are starting something new because
you have finished them all!?
I am happy to report that the Gold Thread Awards have been decided and that Julia Harvey of The
Connecticut River Valley Chapter is the winner from our Region. Julia has done so much for her Chapter, The
Region and EGA and the prize is well deserved. Thank you, from our Region to the five Chapters who each
nominated a member. The winners will be recognized at the EGA Seminar in Santa Fe in October.
There is still time to register for Region Day as well as the second and third Region sponsored GCCs, Spring
Splendor taught by Kay Stanis (registration will end November 1) and My Favorite Bracelet (registration will
end in March) taught by Jeanette Carmichael.
Please read about the wonderful teachers and the rest of the update on NER Seminar 2013 “Spring into
Stitching”(April 5-7). I already have the dates on my new calendar and there are several pieces I would love to
stitch!
I hope you all have a great summer and are back in the fall stitching up a storm.
Keep cool (I'm working on a Christmas Angel and that helps!),
Pat

Gathering for Winter Etui with Betsy Morgan
Level: Intermediate
"Gathering for Winter" is an acorn themed etui which is cylinder shaped with a lid which slides on a cord and
is secured with bead and loop closures. Four "smalls" are tucked inside - a scissor fob and scissor sheath, a
pin cushion which mimics the shape of the etui box and
a needle book.
This etui was inspired by the turned wooden acorn which
embellishes the end of the closure cord. One of these
acorns will be included in each kit. They are hand made
by Sylvan Treasures and come in a variety of exotic
woods. Students will be able to choose from the many
colors of the different woods.
The students will pre-stitch the thimble holder,
which involves 2-3 hours of stitching time, and we
will then construct the pin cushion during class.
Making the pin cushion will give students all of the
information they need in order to construct the etui box.
Class will cover construction of the rest of the “smalls” as
well as the ribbon binding. There will also be a
NER Newsletter Summer 2012

Bed Rugs
Exploring Their History – A Lecture
What Stitches Were Used – A Hands-on Demonstration
Historic Bed Rugs Lecture and Workshop
So where did the phrase “snug as a bug in a rug’ come from? The first known example of this phrase in print
is found in the account of David Garrick's celebration of Shakespeare’s Garrick's vagary, or, England run
mad; with particulars of the Stratford Jubilee, 1769: “If she [a rich widow] has the mopus's [coins or money],
I'll have her, as snug as a bug in a rug.” Rug is a Tudor word with the same source as “rag,” yet Henry VIII
wouldn't have walked on his rugs, as they were originally thick woolen bed coverlets – pretty much what we
would now call blankets. Our New England Bed Rugs have a backing of wool and are entirely covered with
looped yarn stitched and cut or uncut. Many bold and colorful designs are known. It wasn't until the early
19th Century that rugs were put on the floor. The first of their kind were hearth-rugs.
On Saturday, August 11th, the Celestial Stitchers Chapter of the Embroiderers
Guild of American is hosting a lecture and workshop by Gina Gerhard and
Sandra Tarbox on the historical aspects of the type of needlework and
materials used to make bed rugs. The emphasis will be on bed rugs in their
historic context and the technique used to make them. Participants in the
afternoon workshop will have an opportunity to purchase a $15 kit (5” sample
piece) or participants can just try their hand on a shared piece at no charge.
The event will be held at the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church hall, 34 Prospect
Street, Shrewsbury, MA, on August 11th from 10:45 to 3:00. The admission fee for the morning lecture is $7
and $15 for the afternoon workshop. Participants may attend both sessions for $20. Both session require
pre-registration. Registration is at 10:45, lecture at 11:00, brown-bag lunch at noon and the workshop is
1:00 to 3:00. Brown-bag lunches will be available for $6 or bring your own. Drinks will be provided by the
Chapter.

Fine and Fancy Tulip Tray
Hi Everyone! I am so excited to tell you that Sherri Jones will be coming to the Berkshire County
Chapter EGA on September 21, 2013 to teach her gorgeous Fine And Fancy Tulip Tray!! This
class is limited to 25 participants. This unique tray was inspired by an antique Mauchline Ware
tray, circa 1910. The tray, made exclusively for Patrick's Woods, is created from rich dark
walnut. The individual tray pieces are laced together with hand-dyed silk ribbon. Stitched
pocket slips are laced to each panel, and a pearl button with silk ribbon bow embellishes the top
of each panel. Pocket slips are stitched in a variety of florentine patterns with motifs of vintage
style tulips and swans. The bottom panel is stitched in a darning pattern that shows off the
fabulous sheen of the silk fibers. A vintage velvet berry hangs from one button. The tray is
outfitted with a fabulous vintage velvet figural tulip needle case, inspired by a Victorian needle
case in a private collection, and a pyn pillow and berry pyn tower. Matching walnut ruler and
thread palette are available separately.
Kit includes linen, silk floss, vintage velvets, pearl buttons, glass head pins, silk ribbons and other
finishing supplies. Please bring paper scissors, tape measure, thin sharp sewing needles, neutral
basting thread, acid free glue stick, double stick tape and small rotary cutter, mat, and ruler set.
Registration is open now. Cost is $300 ($290 for Berkshire County Chapter EGA members). You do
not need to be an EGA member to take this class. You must be in attendance to take this class.
This is a pre-stitch class. The pre-stitch kits will be mailed out in January 2013. You may pay for
the class in full or in two payments. A $100 deposit ($20 is non-refundable) will hold your place in
class with the balance due by November 1, 2012. Class will be held at the Lenox Methodist
Church in Lenox, Massachusetts. Class is from 9 am to 4 pm with an hour lunch break. Please feel

Spring Splendor (Teacher: Kay
Stanis)
Finally, after that long cold winter and the long cold
drizzle that melted the gray snow and rinsed the earth
clean, comes the time of generous sun. Blossoms
exuberantly play in the golden light and spring walks

Save the Dates!!! June 21 – 22, 2014
Merrimack Valley Chapter has booked the
hotel for our 10th Biennial Seminar in 2014
Saturday, June 21, 2014
Sunday, June 22, 2014
Marriott Courtyard Hotel, Billerica, MA
As in the past, we will have two structured
classes plus studio time. We haven t
picked the teacher yet, but we have
chosen the techniques: beading and
surface stitchery
If there are any specific teachers you'd like
us to consider for these classes, please let
us know. Anyone on the Board will be
happy to make sure your suggestions are
part of the selection process.
This will be our third seminar at this hotel.
It is a lovely facility for us -- conveniently
located with more than enough classroom
space. And everyone has a great time
looking for bargains at the yard sale. We
hope lots of you will be able to join us.
EGA SEMINAR 2012
SANTA FE ENCHANTMENT
October 28 – November 2, 2012
SPOTLIGHT ON TOURS
Now that most EGA members have received the Seminar 2012 Santa Fe Enchantment brochure
(mailed with the March issue of Needle Arts), selecting your class preferences often takes
priority. But, how do you choose just one tour? Every tour is too intriguing to pass up! The 2012
menu of tours offers more than the area's rich history and unique culture. Don't miss the
behind-the-scenes treasures featured on many tours; these experiences are not accessible
when touring on your own. Because these tour opportunities are so unique, space is limited.
Decisions, decisions, decisions! It's fun daydreaming about each tour, but you will need to
choose and book your favorite right away to assure a spot!

EGA SEMINAR 2012
SANTA FE ENCHANTMENT
October 28 – November 2, 2012
Focus on Special Events
Santa Fe Enchantment is offering too many special events to list here, but one of the notable highlights
is the Rocky Mountain Region Prospectors Exhibit. This exhibit, unique to the RMR seminars, showcases
original, creative, and adventurous stitching based on a theme. The theme for this year is Visions of
Santa Fe. And as a bonus, this year will include an Encore of past Prospectors entries! You will certainly
need to make time to see each piece.
Another not-to-be-missed special event is the President's Farewell Exhibit of Helenn Rumpel's
"Embroidery Enlightenment: an Artist's Concept". This event will reveal Helenn's unique fiber art and
what it is that leads her to incorporate diversified techniques into her brightly hued and gem-like
interpretive works. Her stitchery and innovative framing of embroidery enhance her compositions of
beauty, and show how teaching renews the artistic experience.
Then, you must remember to be first to arrive at The Trading Post! This merchandise event has our
experts combing the New Mexico area for distinctive items unique to the South West. Look for kits,
beads, tools, materials, accessories & trinkets. Will you find that exceptional handmade item you need?

next newsletter is November 10.
The Winter 2012 newsletter went out in
mid-April, delivered in two electronic
formats (MSWord, pdf) and paper. 9 paper

recipients and four subscribers. Renewal
notices were sent to two recipients whose
subscriptions were due to expire. Cost for
the winter paper copies was $33.22.
Please do please check your copy for
typing/spelling errors. I will try to catch

non-standard names are completely
correct for the specific situation (e.g.,

Our annual meeting was held on April 21st
with a trip to Salmon Brook Historical
Society in Granby, Connecticut. We were
treated to viewing silk embroideries from
1803 made by sisters Hilpah and Melissa
Hays while they attended Litchfield Female
Academy. We also were able to view many
items displayed especially for our chapter.
At the conclusion of our program, the
election of officers was held. See attached
for the officers for 2012-2014.
Membership is currently at 55, with 6 nonrenewals.
We are in the midst of our exciting
program with Lynn Payette – “Tree of
Life.” The program began on June 15th and
16th and will be concluded on December
8th. Each attendee received an
individualized piece with initials of their
choosing. Students were given a choice of
two color-ways to work with. Stitches
include couching, chain, outline, whipped
back-stitch, long and short, satin, raised
chain, buttonhole, closed and open fly,
fishbone, and French knots.
Our fall class will be held October 12th and
13th with Carolyn Standing Webb on a piece
entitled “Ancestree.” This tree of life
design will be a very personal family tree.
Students will get a chart where names
supplied become part of the design. You
can add your mother, grandmother, great
grandmother and back for 5 generations or
you can make one with just your
immediate family. The tree is stitched on
32 count antique white linen with black
silk threads. Three sizes of black thread
are used to shade the design. Gold thread
is added for a special sparkle. Shading is

April In April we had a guest speaker at our
meeting, Laura Rosenspan, who is a gifted
quilter, and one of the docents at the
Fuller Museum of Crafts in Brockton. Laura
brought a 4 panel qjuilt, on which she is
embroidering the word PEACE in several
languages. Our members could provide her
with the word in several languages, and
then we had a chance to do some of the
embroidering. Peg Weisker, Mary Gelenian,
Fern Burdette, and Stephanie Motyl were
able to continue doing some of the
embroidering at the Monday afternoon
stitching group at the Sharon, MA
community center. Peg, Mary, and Fern are
attending that group on a regular basis.
May At our May meeting we discussed
teaching embroidery to Junior Cadette Girl
Scouts in Foxboro, in the fall. We will be
using patterns published in the
INTERWEAVE magazine, and Mary Gelenian
has contacted them, and we have
permission to do so. Virginia Banian has
contacted the Scouts in Foxboro.
At the meeting we were thrilled to have a
woman come and donate kits, magazines,
books, fabric, floss, folders with
charts/instructions., etc. We set aside
much of it to use with Scouts, and then
enjoyed shopping for ourselves. What is
left--lots-- Beth McKee will sell for the
benefit of our treasury. We were delighted
to have this windfall, and the woman's
husband looked delighted to have it ourt of
his house. Lori Yarworth is graciously
storing these goodies for us.
June We were saddened to learn of the
death of Jinny Baker, one of our dear
members. Cancer, and she had been
hoping to last until her 90th birthday in
August. She was a very special person.
Also, Peg Weisker's brother Bernard died in
May.
We had two special guest speakers at our
June meeting. Beth McKee has set up an
email address for our chapter, and a
woman from Cambridge contacted Beth,
about possibly joining our chapter. She
does Chinese embroidery. She offered to
21
come and speak to us when her teacher,
who is from China, comes to visit, and we
were fortunate enough to have them both
come to our June meeting. They brought
many examples of their work, which is
exquisite. They showed us the silk that
they use, on silk organdy, and the tiny
short needles, and the teacher did some
sample stitching for us. The work is
completely the same on both sides. They
have to learn to do one pattern first before
they can progress to the next pattern.
May--completion of band sampler, and
election of president and treasurer.
Alma Spinney, our Outreach Chair,
provided me with the outreach work done
since the March meeting, and I have
forwarded that to Violet.
We end up tonight with our annual June
dinner out.Respectfully submitted, -Ann
We have had a program committee
meeting, chaired by Mary Gelenian. We
have a proposed schedule for next year:
Merrimack Valley Chapter
MVC meets monthly April through
December on the third Tuesday. Meetings
at the Tewksbury Congregational Church
and start at 7 pm. Stitch-ins are held
January through March on the 3rd Tuesday
September --working on kits for use with
the Girl Scouts. Patterns are from the
PIECEWORK magazine, which is published
by Interweave Press. We will be working
with the scouts during their meetings.
October--we will make up kits and begin
working on name tags for our 30th
anniversary.
November--work on the name tags
December--no meeting, holiday dinner out,
cookie swap, ornament and gift exchange.
January--we will be working on personal
projects, and we will discuss ideas for a
band sampler for our anniversary. Everyone
will do the name tags, and the band
sampler is optional. Nominating committee
will be appointed for election of president
and treasurer.
February--name tags will be completed at
this meeting.
March--begin band sampler. Kits will be
made up beforehand.
April--work on band sampler. Also a
Saturday class will be scheduled in addition
to our regular meeting.
NER Newsletter Winter 2012
June--regular meeting, and also dinner out
another night
This was our final meeting until
September. We discussed having stitch-ins
during the summer, and that idea was
happily accepted.
We will be having board meetings during
the summer to begin work on the revision
of our by-laws.

The Merrimack Valley Chapter has 63
members with the recent annual renewal.
MVC had a very successful seminar in April,
and our board has already started looking
toward 2014, with the dates of June 21-22.
Marilyn Shesko taught a wonderful class on
Kumihimo, Japanese braiding, and I highly
recommend that other chapters consider a
similar program. It is easy to learn the
basics, and yields lovely braid to
complement finished needlework.
We have an exciting set of programs
planned. In June and September, we are
doing the Edward Scissorfish beaded scissor
case. In August and November we have the
Amethyst Gemstone Ornament, and in
September we have a cool zipper flower –
new way to use those excess zippers! Our
holiday party in December will close out
the year, including a Christmas tree pin
project with Lynn Payette. MVC will also
host a Japanese Embroidery class with Judy
Jeroy September 19-23.
