FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY CONTACT: ANNMARIE DEASY 714-628-4745 deasy_annmarie@sccollege.edu Santiago Canyon College Student Chosen for American Psychological Association’s Summer Science Institute June 8—Santiago Canyon College student James Head, a 19-year-old resident of Tustin, has been selected to attend the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Summer Science Institute in Vanderbilt, Tennessee, June 19-27, 2004. Head is one of only 32 college and university students chosen from throughout the U.S. to attend the prestigious nine-day institute. Designed to immerse students in the field of psychology, the institute provides the opportunity to explore the intellectual, personal, and social processes of scientific inquiry. Students will experience cutting-edge psychological research through seminars and hands-on laboratory activities. Freshman and sophomore students compete to receive the honor of attending the institute, which includes all expenses other than travel and a $200 registration fee. The Santiago Canyon College Foundation contributed toward Head’s expenses. “What impressed me most about James is his dedication to his studies,” said Dr. Cari Cannon, associate professor of psychology at Santiago Canyon College. --more-- Santiago Canyon College Student to Attend APA’s Summer Science Institute 2 of 2 “Last semester in one of my courses, James missed one class due to knee surgery. He took extraordinary measures to avoid missing any additional lectures, returning the following day with a leg brace and crutches.” Head graduated from Foothill High School and currently serves as president of Santiago Canyon College’s Psychology Club while maintaining a G.P.A. of 3.9. He hopes to transfer to UCLA and major in industrial organization psychology after completing his studies at Santiago Canyon College. His career goals are to become a college professor and research scientist. Santiago Canyon College and Santa Ana College are public community colleges of Rancho Santiago Community College District which serves the residents of Anaheim Hills, Garden Grove, Irvine, Orange, Santa Ana, Tustin and Villa Park.
