Lia takes any Afrikaans word as input and produces the linguistic correct lemma of the word as output. For example, the inflected word-forms “hondjie” (‘puppy’) and “bote” (‘boats’) will be respectively lemmatised as “hond” (‘dog’) and “boot” (‘boat’). Version 1.0 Beta enables the user to specify different algorithm and parameter settings for optimal performance in terms of linguistic accuracy, classification speed and memory usage. Groenewald (2005) reports that Lia achieves a linguistic accuracy figure of 91,11% when trained with a dataset consisting of 56,000 words.
