On a separate piece of paper, answer the following questions using COMPLETE SENTENCES; a) In your own words, define and describe the differences between representative government and responsible government. (2 mks for details and quality of thought) -Representative government is one in which representative are elected by people to make laws on their behalf. -Responsible governments can be voted out is elected representatives fail to please a majority of the people who elected them. b) Who was William Lyon Mackenizie and what did he do to protest against the government? (2mks for explanation and examples) He was a radical reformer who protested against the government. He purchased a newspaper,,The Colonial Advocate…and published articles that strongly criticized the government and the Family compact. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1828. c) Why did the French-Canadians in Lower Canada have difficulty with the British model of government? What did they compare it to that made them dislike it so much? (2 mks for details and quality of thought) The French did not trust the British, they didn’t speak English, and they found British rule without democracy difficult to accept. Control of thei colony was in the hands of an oligarchy of merchants and ex-army officers. English seemed to have most of the advantages which made the French feel like their culture was being attacked. d) What events made Britain realized that the old ways of administering the colonies would have to change? Be sure to describe the events and their results for full marks. (2mks for explanation and examples) Rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada -Upper Canada…reformers wanted American style democracy. England appointed Sir Francis Bond Head as governor in 1836. He was loyal to the Family Compact and dissolved the Assembly after it reprimanded him. A new election was called and won the election by advocating loyalty to Britain. MacKenzie led a militia and he sent them to attack Toronto to capture Governor Head and set up a new government. He couldn’t get enough support for this so he ordered an attack to begin at Montgomery’s Tavern. It failed and MacKenzie escaped to America disguised as a woman. The rebellion was a failure. Some of the leaders of the rebellions were publicly hanged or shipped to Bermuda or other penal colonies for seven years of hard labor. 3. In the space found opposite, create an announcement or poster that will attract volunteers to serve in either the government militia or the rebel forces in 1837. You will be marked out of 10 for quality of work and your ability to use information in such a ways as to stir emotions.
