Program Facilitator-Career Mentoring

1 Full-time Maternity Leave Contract (November 2015 – November 2016)

Rexdale Community Health Centre (RCHC) is a non-profit, multi-service, community-based organization that serves communities in Rexdale and North-West Etobicoke. Operating out of five locations, RCHC offers core services that include; primary health care, health promotion, community development programs, Pathways to Education and Diabetes Education Centre.

The primary goal of the Pathways to Education program is to address the social determinants of health by providing programs and services to enhance the educational and employment success of youth in the Jamestown community. We work with high-school students to keep them in school, improve their academic success and help them move on to post-secondary education.

The Program Facilitator

– Career Mentoring, will be part of the Pathways to Education Team, specifically developing, implementing and monitoring career mentoring component of the program for senior students. Reporting to the Program Coordinator – Mentoring, this individual will work closely with Student Parent Support Workers and other staff to support student learning through developing and facilitating students’ involvement primarily in relation to post-secondary preparation and admission, employment and internships.

Responsibilities:

Facilitate group activities, speakers and resource creation to support career planning, which may include organizing people, space, routines, materials and data collection

Work to arrange events and opportunities for youth to meet practitioners in various occupations and or fields of study

 Coordinate and attend ongoing trips throughout the year to support and heighten student’s awareness to career planning

Liaise and partner with outside organizations, post-secondary administrators and high school guidance departments on information, events or resources specific to postsecondary education or employment

Work in collaboration with Student/Parent Support Workers (SPSWs) to provide individualized support, design personalized career mentoring plan and monitor participation for students

Coordinate eligibility and access to the Pathways Bursary fund

Connect with Pathways Canada regarding Bursary disbursement, and access

Support students / alumni students to post-secondary, OSAP, bursary, scholarship applications

Maintain Career Mentoring database through PASS

Create monthly reports and submit to Mentoring Coordinator; along with other yearly reports for Pathways Canada

Conduct career clinics through the year

Work to increase the knowledge base and resources of the Pathways program concerning: Ontario education credit system; the application process to post-secondary institutions; apprenticeship training and post-secondary employment opportunities; and post-secondary awards, grants, scholarships, and other funding sources

Communicate with parents about post-secondary opportunities, goals and issues

Work with students to develop interview skills for college, university, summer internship or preparation for apprenticeship opportunities and aid in their efforts

Assist the Coordinator with assessing career mentoring partnerships, recommending program improvements, reporting and other duties

Problem-solve difficulties and celebrate successes with students, parents and staff

Model diversity as a resource using inclusive program materials and practices

Assist, as needed, other staff and the larger Mentoring, Pathways and Rexdale

Community Health Centre teams

Qualifications:

Relevant university degree or combination of education and experience

At least 3 years’ experience in career counseling, guidance counseling, and creditcounseling

Excellent knowledge of college and university systems

Access to a vehicle considered a strong asset

Ability to work flexible hours; including evenings and weekend

Must be able to provide a vulnerable sector security clearance

Knowledge, preferably gained by experience of the following:

Post-secondary application processes and challenges

Post-secondary funding sources and supports for youth

Issues affecting the diverse populations of Rexdale and the surrounding areas, including general issues affecting low-income communities and immigrant families

Community, employment, post-secondary and social service resources for youth

Anti-discrimination, anti-oppression concepts and practices

The ability to effectively work:

With youth facing a variety of challenges throughout their years in high school

Flexible hours built around after-school access for students, school/program site visits and evening office hours with occasional weekend hours

With community partners and youth agencies on mentoring opportunities

Within the values, goals, mission and policies of the Rexdale Community Health Centre and the Pathways to Education program.

Demonstrated skills in:

Excellent communication, both oral, written, and electronic for a variety of audiences

Documentation and analysis of student data for patterns and challenges

Time management and organization for daily, weekly and monthly deadlines

Computer word processing, spread sheets, data base and desk top publishing

 Problem solving for immediate and long-term challenges

Full-Time Starting Salary Range: $36, 696 - $48, 928 (depending on experience)

This position does not include Extended Health Benefits and RRSP benefits. You will be entitled to statutory benefits and 4% vacation pay.

Hours per week: 35 (flexible hours)
