Monday Project Read and Spelling------Students will complete Unit 19
Project Read assessment over r-controlled vowel spellings and red words
who, come, and some
Students will complete a spelling assessment over the following words: fur,
turn, church, come, some, or, short, torch, north, sport.
Unit 20 Lesson 1 Skill: Open Syllable
Teacher will display the word met and ask students why the vowel is short?
The single vowel is closed in by a consonant.
In this lesson you will learn what happens to the vowel sound when a single
vowel is open at the end of a word or syllable.
Teacher will display the word me and tell students that this word ends in a
single vowel. This is a one vowel sound word. It is a one syllable word.
When a word or syllable ends with a single vowel the vowel sound is long.
Teacher places the diacritical mark for a long vowel above the vowel.
Example: me with a straight mark over the e.
The vowel sound says its long sound e. The word is pronounced me.
Sentence for word meaning: Come with me to the circus.
Teacher will pass out worksheet 20-3 and with teacher guidance the students
will read the words, mark the vowel, and read the sentences. This worksheet
will be sent home for reading homework.
Tuesday Project Read and Spelling---Unit 20 Lesson 1 Skill: Open Syllable
and Lesson 2 Skill: Red word very
Teacher will display the word met and ask students why the vowel is short?

will discuss how to divide the words into syllables and mark the vowels on
top. Students will then read the words and the sentences on the sheet. This
worksheet will be sent home for reading homework.
Teacher will place the story, “Ho-Bo Hux” under the document camera.
Class will mark the vowels on top in some words in the story and divide
some 2 syllable words into syllables to read. Then class will read and discuss
the story. This story will be sent home for reading homework.
Class will review all the red words previously taught and flash red word
cards. Teacher will display the word very and provide the following
sentences for word meaning: That is a very big dog. You are very smart.
Students make up sentences with the word very.
Students will tap and sweep on their arm the word very 5 times.
Teacher will place the story, “Chicken Pox” under the document camera.
Students will mark the vowels on top in some words in the story and divide
some 2 syllable words into syllables to read. Class will read and discuss the
story. This story will be sent home for reading homework.
Sentence Dictation: Students will head a piece of paper with Dictation at the
top, name and date underneath. Teacher will dictate the following sentences
and students will repeat and count the number of words in each sentence
before writing. After work on this activity, students will discuss and check
their work.
1. We are smart kids.
2. I think she said no.
3. Would you go with me?
4. It is very hot.
5. That rock is very big.
Wednesday Project Read and Spelling---Unit 20 Review Lesson 1 Skill:
Open Syllable and Lesson 2 Skill: red words very, once, whose
Teacher will place worksheet 20-3 under the document camera. Students
will review that when a word or syllable ends with a single vowel the vowel
sound is long. Also review the long straight diacritical mark that goes over
those long vowels in the words. Practice rereading words and sentences.
Teacher will place worksheet 20-5 under the document camera and students
will review steps for dividing words into syllables and marking the vowel
diacritical marks over the vowels in each word. Practice rereading words and
sentences.
Class will also review open syllables by rereading and discussing the story,
“Ho-Bo Hux” (which the teacher will place under the document camera).
Oral reading check will be done. Teacher will leave the story under the
document camera while students complete a short comprehension quiz over
the story. After quiz is complete, students will use the story to discuss what
answers that they should have marked on the quiz.

and sweeping the word 5 times.
Students will also arm tap spell to read all red word cards studied thus far.
Class will also review the word very by rereading and discussing the story,
“Chicken Pox” (which the teacher will place under the document camera).

document camera while students complete a short comprehension quiz over
the story. After quiz is complete, students will use the story to discuss what
answers that they should have marked on the quiz.

Teacher will place worksheet 20-3 under the document camera. Students
will review that when a word or syllable ends with a single vowel the vowel
sound is long. Also review the long straight diacritical mark that goes over
those long vowels in the words. Practice rereading words and sentences.

Lesson 3---Suffix –ed
Teacher will display the following sentences and have students read.
1. Bill jumps. 2. Bill jumped.
The first sentence tells us what Bill is doing now. The second sentence tells
us what Bill already did.
The –ed on the end of the word jump tells us the action happened in the past.
–ed expresses time.
When –ed is added to the end of a word it means past tense or past time.
Examples: jumped, lifted, grabbed
Listen again to the sounds –ed makes at the end of each of these words.
Jumped /t/
Lifted /ed/
Grabbed /d/
The –ed ending has 3 sounds: /t/, /ed/, and /d/.
Teacher will say the following words and students will determine which
sound the ed suffix says in each word:
1. added /ed/
5. landed /ed/
2. played /d/
6. helped /t/
3. baked /t/
7. skipped /t/
4. picked /t/
8. walked /t/
Teacher will pass out worksheet 20-23,24 and with teacher supervision, the
students will read the sentences orally and fill in the sound of the –ed ending
on line provided after the end of each –ed word. Students will discuss and
check their work. This worksheet will be sent home for reading homework.
Teacher will pass out Unit 20 Study Guide. Teacher will ask questions and
students will complete. Work will be discussed and checked on the study
guide, which will be sent home for study homework.
Friday Project Read and Spelling---Unit 20 Assessment
Oral Reading Check on worksheets 20-3, 20-5, 20-19, 20-23,24
Students will complete Unit 20 Assessment and spelling test over the
following words: me, no, bingo, jumbo, lifted, jumped, played, very, whose,
once.
