Connect At Calderstones Calderstones Park Community Excavation Volunteer Application Form Thank you for volunteering on one of our excavations. This excavation will run 27th April – 8th May will be based at Calderstones Park, Liverpool. This excavation will focus on excavating areas of the park to further our understanding of the long history of the area; examining the archaeological deposits and retrieving any artefacts. Getting to site Please see directions in attached documents. Meet at The Reader Organisation at Calderstones Mansion House each morning. On site Work will begin on site at 9.30am with a site tour and health and safety briefing, and end at 3.30pm. If you need to leave earlier please speak to a member of staff. There will be break and lunch times during the day. The excavation will be taking place within the public space of the park grounds and near built up areas, so general courtesy is expected from all involved. There will be a number of activities on-site to get involved with, including excavation, recording, drawing, sieving and finds washing. When you arrive on site you will be given a brief introduction to the site, and a short health and safety briefing. All work will be under the supervision of professional archaeologists from National Museums Liverpool Field Archaeology Unit. If you have any questions or concerns about the work you’re undertaking please don’t hesitate to ask. Site rules, facilities and etiquette o o o If you are unsure of anything address questions to your supervisor. Take care – archaeological sites can be dangerous places – deep holes and sharp tools. Note that space on the site is restricted and any unsafe behaviour will not be tolerated. There will be toilets available within the Mansion House for use by volunteers. o o o o o o o o Do not consume alcohol or drugs during onsite hours. Do not eat or drink in trenches. Do not leave rubbish on site. Smoking is not permitted on site. No obscene language or behaviour. No sexual harassment. No threatening behaviour. No under 18 year olds (unless by pre-arranged site tours) What to bring with you Some good solid shoes or boots Layers of clothes to cope with changes in weather, and some waterproofs A hat: a warm hat if it’s cold, a sunhat if it’s sunny Lunch and also some snacks, you might be doing some quite physical work, need to keep the batteries recharged! Drinks: a flask of something warm if the weather’s cold, and a cold drink to rehydrate you if it’s a warm day Tight-fitting gardening gloves if you have them Wetwipes to clean your hands before lunch Some people find a kneeling pad useful, if you have one for gardening You’re welcome to bring your camera or take photos on your phone Don’t worry about tools – all those will be supplied!
