Dear Professional and Young Scientists! Dear Friends! The health of Earth's ecosystem is the foundation of all health. Human impact in the form of population pressure, resource abuse, economic self-interest, and inappropriate technologies is rapidly degrading the environment. This impact, in turn, is creating new patterns of human and ecosystem poverty and disease. The tension among ecosystem health, public health, and individual health is reaching a breaking point at the beginning of the XXIst Century. All living organisms depend on their environments for energy and the materials needed to sustain life: clean air, potable water, nutritious food, and safe places to live. The Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development represents a timely opportunity to identify key linkages between environmental health and sustainable development objectives. Approximately 1.1 billion people currently lack access to safe drinking water, and 2.6 billion do not have proper sanitation. Environmental hazards increase the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and many other illnesses. These hazards can be physical e.g., pollution and food contaminants, or they can be social, including dangerous work conditions and poverty. In the practical management of environmental risks, it is necessary to balance the likelihood and costs of various degrees of impact with the cost of remediation efforts. But in the case of global climate change, given the high risks associated with high-emission futures, the sensible balancing of risks, costs and benefits makes a particularly strong case for serious mitigation efforts. Environmental health has been defined in a 1999 document by the World Health Organization (WHO) as: Those aspects of the human health and disease that are determined by factors in the environment. It also refers to the theory and practice of assessing and controlling factors in the environment that can potentially and affect health. Environmental health as used by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, includes both the direct pathological effects of chemicals, radiation and some biological agents, and the effects (often indirect) on health and well being of the broad physical, psychological, social and cultural environment, which includes housing, urban development, land use and transport. In 2015, the WHO website on environmental health states "Environmental health addresses all the physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person, and all the related factors impacting behaviours. It encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health. It is targeted towards preventing disease and creating health-supportive environments. This definition excludes behaviour not related to environment, as well as behaviour related to the social and cultural environment, as well as genetics." Humans interact with the environment constantly. These interactions affect the quality of life. So, The Environmental Health is the relationship between the people and their environment, how it affects their physical well-being and what they can do to influence the quality of the environment and to enhance the protection of their health. Global and local environmental determinants of health are heavily impacted by globalising processes such as industrial development, trade, migration, economics, resource management, environmental governance, stb. Such processes are pressuring and driving systemic environmental changes with important health consequences such as climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, pollution, toxic exposures, etc. However, increased understanding of environmental health risks can also drive positive global environmental changes such as more effective ecosystem and chemical management, healthy built environments, disaster risk reduction, sustainable agriculture and clean energy initiatives. The reality of climate change and the associated role of human activity have been debated at length in many forums. Climate models can be used to simulate past changes in climate, current conditions and projected changes in climate, incorporating chemical, physical, biological and meteorological processes embodied in the Earth’s system. In 2013, scientists reported that the level of CO2 in the atmosphere had reached its highest peak in at least 3 million years. This alarming number, due to human fossil fuel emissions, can cause climate change. Some of those changes are the following: o Over 6 billion people inhabit the Earth planet, and reasonable mid-level estimates predict 9-10 billion by mid-century. Two and a half more "earths" would be needed to support today's population if everyone were to use as many resources. o Stratospheric O3 depletion is the direct result of the release of O3-depleting chemicals used for various industrial and agricultural purposes. o CO2 level in the atmosphere has increased by nearly 30% in the last 150 years. o Human activities are responsible for more atmospheric N2-fixation than all other sources combined. Nitrates contaminate ground water and surface water, and nitrous oxides the air, at toxic concentrations. o Humans are responsible for heavy metals deposition on the surface of the earth than from other geological sources. o Large numbers of plant and animal species have been driven to extinction, and most marine fisheries are severely depleted. o Novel synthetic industrial chemicals contaminate the world's ecosystems, its human and non-human inhabitants, their breast milk and egg yolk, ovarian follicles, and amniotic fluid. The toxicity of most is little known. For the Healthy People in 2020, Environmental Health objectives focus on 6 topics: o Outdoor air quality o Surface and ground water quality o Toxic substances and hazardous wastes o Homes and communities o Infrastructure and surveillance o Global environmental health Maintaining a healthy environment is central to increasing quality of life and years of healthy life. Globally, nearly 25% of all deaths and the total disease burden can be attributed to environmental factors which include for example: o Exposure to hazardous substances in the air, water, soil, and food o Natural and technological disasters o Physical hazards o Nutritional deficiencies, etc. The 6th ICEEE-2015 International Conference tries to find solutions for today’s problems of the environmental health and the success of the 6th ICEEE-2015 Conference will be due to the creative input of its participants. Therefore, the 6th ICEEE-2015 Conference will be structured not only around sessions, but will rely on workshops, forums, round tables and discussions to unite attendees in finding solutions. The Organizing Committee invites submissions of session proposals and side events. In keeping with the spirit of the conference title: „Global Environmental Change and Environmental Health: Progress and Challenges”, the Organizing Committee is developing a programme that will highlight the advances made to address the current environmental health problems facing our changing world. For these reasons, the 6th ICEEE-2015 International Conference invites scientific work papers that provide research, comment and discussion on the opportunities and challenges of „Global Environmental Change and Environmental Health”. Finally, the Organizing Committee of the 6th ICEEE-2015 International Conference welcomes your participation and look forward to receiving your submissions. Sincerely, The Organizing Committee 2015 Scope and Opportunities Environmental Health Progress and Challenges are wide spread environmental health hazards resulting from inaction or/and action of man, potentially degenerating environmental media with attendant long and short term public health effects. Such effects can be localized, regional or global with serious socio‐economic drawbacks. Therefore, emerging environmental health risks and challenges are those that are coming into existence because of changes in the environment, thus increase their prevalence across various ecosystems. World is still struggling to address the existing environmental health problems, new challenges and progress are emerging which require complex solutions. The causes of these can be traced to: o Advances in technology. o Climate change. o Waste management. o Increase in industrialization. o Pollution of water resources, air and soil. o Poor sanitation and human hygiene. o Population growth. Five development priorities were identified at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in August 2002: 1. water, where 1.3 billion people live without clean water and 2 billion without sanitation; 2. energy, where 2 billion people live without modern energy services, including electricity; 3. health, where 1.3 billion people are exposed to dangerous levels of outdoor pollution and about 2 billion to dangerous levels of indoor air pollution, and nearly all inhabitants of the earth are at some risk of infectious diseases; 4. agriculture, where 800 million people are currently malnourished; and 5. biodiversity, where genetic, species and ecosystem-level diversity is being lost at an unprecedented rate. The magnitude of the emerging climate change-related environmental problem requires discussion of how countries can respond, both now and in the future. The main approaches of the 6th ICEEE-2015 International Conference are: Provide a platform to exchange emerging ideas and investigate key issues such as: air-, water-, soil-, nuclear pollution, waste recycling and reduction, wastewater, renewable energy technologies, public health issues, etc. Provide an excellent international forum for researchers and practitioners to continue research and characterize the global environmental changes and how they affect environmental ecosystems health. The ability to collect record and analyze data and planning further tasks in time. Ability to work towards sustainable solutions. Working within a team either personally or online, to identified problems to find solutions or to develop arguments. Think critically about the most important issues of environmental health. Try to solve the problems with creative and innovative strategies and being conscious of global social, cultural and environmental health issues in relation to engineering and technology. Highlighting some of the main landmarks in this area and recommending directions for future research. These landmarks are related to: o Chemical burden of disease. o Environmental issues (air, water, soil quality and food) at XXI century. o Environmental health of the mother and the child. o Global climate change and its effects on the environmental health. o Regulation at national, regional and international level. o Sustainable development goals and health. o Tools in environmental health for decision-making. Topics of interest The 6th ICEEE-2015 International Conference will bring together keynote and invited speakers and international researchers from academia, authorities and industry, to communicate and share a wide range of highlighting potential issues and paths towards the environmental health and the sustainable at present and future.
