Seismic Stratigraphy
Exercise
The following exercise covers the basic principles and concepts of
seismic stratigraphy. You will learn how to identify seismic
depositional sequences and sequence boundaries and how to define
seismic facies using recognizable features of seismic reflection
images.
These concepts will then be used to interpret selected examples of
seismic data.
To proceed, click on the color-coded pathway in the design flowchart.
Use the glossary to gain a better understanding of key terms and
definitions. To receive guidance when making decisions for any step
in the process, click on “Ask the Expert” from the menu.

Seismic Stratigraphy
The first step of this exercise is to acquire a fundamental
understanding of the concepts of Depositional Sequence and
Coastal Onlap. These concepts are basic stratigraphic principles
and are crucial in identifying and interpreting seismic sequence
boundaries. Click on the yellow box to proceed.

Seismic Stratigraphy
The next step of the exercise is to interpret seismic sequence
boundaries by identifying unconformities, reflector angularity patterns,
and reflector terminations in the seismic data.

Seismic Stratigraphy
The next step of the exercise is to develop a methodology for
characterizing seismic facies. Common techniques combine several
seismic sequence descriptors to create areal patterns that help to
interpret a particular depositional environment.

In the last step of the exercise, we will use the methodologies of
identifying and interpreting seismic sequence boundaries and seismic
facies learned in the previous steps to interpret several seismic
sections of different geology and deposition. Good luck!
