Objectives
The goals of this course are
● to give students a basic understanding of pragmatics and its relationship to syntax and
semantics;
● to make students aware of recent work in the field;
● to suggest interesting research topics;
● to promote a general approach to the study of linguistic phenomena which is based on the
analysis of naturally-occurring data, and which draws on insights from all relevant areas
of linguistic theory.
Attendance
Attend every class and arrive on time. Never skip a class in order to complete a late
assignment: come to class, and finish it later. If you expect to be absent due to sickness, death
in the family, or a religious holiday, please notify me before class.
Assessment
Assessment is based on class participation and attendance (10%), Mid test (20%) summary &
presentation (20%), and research paper (50%).
