Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to
operate, and operate mechanical plant used in boatbuilding.

1
All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in
accordance with company procedures.

All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite
health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and
worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under the Health
and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent and delegated legislation.

All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite
environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and
worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations required under the
Resource Management Act 1991, and subsequent and delegated legislation.

All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management
requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

Company procedures, documented or accepted procedures in the workplace where
the unit standard is being assessed.
Job requirements, requirements that may or may not be specified but require correct
choices to achieve including: following safety and workplace procedures and meeting
generally accepted trade practice standards.

Range
mechanical plant may include but is not limited to – band saw, circular saw,
dimension saw, drum sander, bench sander, veneer hot presses, buzzer, spindle
moulder, surface planer, section and plate rollers, pipe bender, brake press, drill
press, thicknesser, dust extractor.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare to operate mechanical plant used in boatbuilding.
Performance criteria
1.1
Machines, ancillary equipment, product and material hazards are identified and
precautions taken in accordance with company procedures and occupational
safety and health standards.
1.2
The process and sequence of operation are identified in accordance with job
requirements and company procedures.
1.3
Mechanical plant is prepared for operation in accordance with job requirements
and company procedures.
Element 2
Operate mechanical plant used in boatbuilding.
Range
processes may include but are not limited to – slitting, rolling, tacking, welding,
lacquering, flanging, seaming, handle fitting, pressing, lining, forming, riveting,
swaging, cutting, screwing, stripping, gluing, wrapping, beading, bending;
evidence of at least four processes is required.
Performance criteria
2.1
Raw material is identified, inspected, and loaded in accordance with job
requirements and company procedures.
2.2
Production processes are carried out in accordance with job requirements and
company procedures.
2.3
Finished product is inspected, stored, and/or dispatched in accordance with job
requirements and company procedures.
2.4
Scrap processing is performed in accordance with job requirements and
company procedures.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by
the last date for assessment set out below.
Replacement information
This unit standard has been replaced by unit standard
29237 and unit standard 29236.
