1 Chinese 102: Elementary Chinese II Instructor: Dr. Xiao-ming Yang, Associate Professor Office: R -- 223 Phone: 255-0400, ext. 2369 Office Hours: To be announced Course objectives This course, a continuation of CHI 100--Elementary Chinese, introduces students to spoken Mandarin Chinese with the aid of Pinyin system and elementary level of reading and writing Chinese characters (simplified). Conduct simple conversation in standard spoken Chinese. Write Chinese characters in the correct order of strokes. Read short essays with the aid of Pinyin. Grading Course grade is derived from the following distribution: 1. mid-term and final exams 50% 2. quizzes 40% 3. attendance and class participation 10% 2 Attendance and class participation You are expected to participate actively in all class activities, including answering questions about everything you read, and discussing issues raised during my lecture. Furthermore, to complete the course successfully, you are expected to attend every class. If you must be absent from class, you are responsible for making up the work that you will miss. After three absences, you will receive an absence warning. Further absence may result in grade penalties or dismissal from the course.
