Professor Ram Jakhu
Professor Jakhu is currently an Associate Professor at the Institute of Air and Space
Law, Faculty of Law, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He teaches three
graduate-level space law courses and one undergraduate course on Public
International Law. He conducts research in international space law, law of space
applications, law of space commercialization, government regulation of space
activities and law of telecommunications. He is the managing editor of Space Library
Regulated Series, a member of the Editorial Boards of the Annals of Air and Space
Law and of the Utrecht Series in Air and Space law, and a member of the Board of
Directors of the International Institute of the Space Law, International Astronautical
Federation, Paris, France.
From January 1995 to December 1998, Prof. Jakhu served the International Space
University (ISU), Strasbourg, France holding various titles, including a Professor and
the first Director of the Master of Space Studies program. As a senior researcher at the
IASL from 1978 to 1994, Dr. Jakhu has substantially contributed to the design,
conduct and writing of numerous reports on major space related research studies.
Prof. Jakhu has also taught at several universities and presented numerous papers at
various conferences held around the world. He has published a book and more than 50
articles in several reputed journals.
Prof. Jakhu has undertaken several consulting assignments for various governments,
organizations and private companies from around the world. He has drafted policies
and laws for several governments.
Prof. Jakhu received his Doctor of Civil Law degree (on Dean’s Honors List) in 1983
in Law of Outer Space from McGill University. He also holds a Master of Laws
(LL.M.) in Air and Space Law from McGill and another LL.M. from Panjab
University, India, in Public and Private International Law. In addition, he has earned
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degrees, and became a member
of Punjab and Haryana Bar Council in 1972.
