The information on the early Yearwoods is being researched. As presented in this document, our Yearwood
ancestors came from England and settled first in Virginia or North Carolina in the early to mid 1700s. From the
latter state, they moved to Tennessee in 1805. From there, the family’s movement generally went as follows:
Jefferson County, Illinois, in 1826; Cooke County, Texas, in 1861 (Civil War); and Caddo County, Oklahoma,
in 1907 (the year Oklahoma became a state).
Based on census and other data, the family name appears to have been Earwood through 1810. The subsequent
census indicates that at least William, Frederick’s father, was still using Earwood in 1820. From that point to
the 1826 move to Illinois, the use of Yearwood became more common. (Frederick died in 1821 and William in
1823.) Research to date has not turned up any public use of Earwood by the family members (Frederick’s
descendants) after their move to Illinois.

Aft. 1840. He married Sarah A. Webber December 29, 1821 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee, daughter of Seth
Webber and Sally Chapman. She was born 1804 in Virginia.
Notes for Aaron Yearwood:
Aaron YEARWOOD came in December 1826. He was accompanied by his mother, with her two sons, Joseph
and Robert, and by his brother William. With William came his wife’s sister Betsy, now Mrs. WATSON. The
father of these three ladies, Robert RANKIN, Sr., came a year or so later, and after a short stay, went to Shelby
County, but left here his son Robert and Mrs. Robert YEARWOOD. Old Mrs. YEARWOOD’S husband’s name
was Frederic; she herself died in 1847. The next fall after Aaron’s arrival, 1827, James SURSA, who’s wife was
sister to his wife and to Ward WEBBER, came out with his brother Jack SURSA. These men and one daughter
were the children of Richard SURSA, who died in the War of 1812. Benjamin WEBBER came with the
YEARWOODS, married a WILKERSON, and settled at the JORDAN or Coley SMITH place on Seven Mile
Creek. Ward WEBBER and John came three years later, 1829, the latter settling in the edge of Wayne County,
while Ward located where Daniel BARFIELD afterward lived. Daniel was step son to James SURSA. About
the same time, 1829, William BYERS came to the place still known as the “Old BYERS place.” Mrs. BYERS “Aunt Nancy” - was sister to old Mr. YEARWOOD. BYERS had a daughter already married to Joseph
BROWN. Pete BRUCE, or Armstead W. and Moses BAUGH, took one each, and the last girl (we suppose not
finding a B. to suit her) was married to Fountain GARRISON. He and James GARRISON came in 1827, and
James died of small pox a few years ago. James married a WIMBERLY; in two or three years after coming out ,

KILLED BY A TRAIN
S. R. Yearwood Meets Death In Evansville Saturday
Victim Was Formerly a Resident of this City and Will be Brought Here for Burial
“Samuel R. Yearwood, aged 87, was killed in Evansville, by a train on the Evansville & Terre Haute railroad.
He had stooped down to pick up some object lying on the tracks, and did not realize the closeness of the
approaching train in time to get out of the way. The pilot of the engine struck him in the head, rendering him
unconscious and he died about an hour later, but did not regain consciousness. He was a crossing flagman in
Evansville for the L & N railroad. Mr. Yearwood was born in Tennessee, but made this city his home for many
years. Three brothers, Wm. F. and J. M. Yearwood, of this city, and A. L. Yearwood, of Evansville, together
with a widow and seven children survive. He was a soldier in the confederate army and served several years for
the cause he espoused. During his term of service he made an excellent record as a soldier. Religiously he clung
to the Baptist faith. The body will be brought here Tuesday morning, on the L & N train, and taken directly to
Sursa cemetery, where a funeral service will be conducted by Rev. W. L. Dorgan. “ Date of birth on tombstone:

Texas Legislature passed a Joint Resolution stating that the government pledged “support and maintenance of
[the soldiers’] families during their absence from home.” In accordance with this Resolution, an “Act to Support
the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers” passed on December 15, 1863. The Act set aside $1,000,000
annually to be paid the “families, widows, and dependents of soldiers currently serving in State or Confederate
forces, or of soldiers killed or disabled in service.” Chief Justices of the counties, on or before March 1 in 1864
and 1865, submitted lists of servicemen and the number of their dependents eligible for relief. The County
Clerk administered the money distributed to the county for this purpose. . .”

“Relatives here have been informed of the serious illness of Aaron L. Yearwood, formerly of this place, who
with his family moved to Howell, Indiana many years ago.
Mr. Yearwood is reported critically ill with Bright’s disease.
Mr. Yearwood will be remembered by many of the older families of Mt. Vernon, as he was one of six brothers
and one sister who resided here. Samuel, William, Robert and Dave Yearwood and Mrs. Buck Oakley, his sister
are dead. Joe Yearwood of Mt. Vernon and Aaron L. Yearwood of Howell are the only survivors. Joe
Yearwood is almost eighty-five years old and is in good health and Aaron L. Yearwood will be eightyone years
old if he lives until next Saturday. He is a veteran of the Civil War. “ (Probably was in the Confederacy with his

[George] had a second “wife.” I’m not too sure the family was convinced it was more than a common law
marriage, but they had at least one daughter, named Reba. Mom [Irene] was in touch with Reba’s children. I
don’t recall Reba being from Eakly.
I know Grandpa [Peter] remembered he was swinging on the porch gate when George left in the wagon. He
asked his father to go with him to town, but George said, “No, not this time.” That was the day he deserted Josie
and the kids.
Years later, it was our grandpa who located George, via a personal ad in Woodsmen of the World. Apparently,
George had always subscribed, and Grandpa thought there might be a good chance he would see the ad. He did
and Grandpa paid for him to come home [to Eakly]. That was, of course, after Josie had died. Mom also said
George was a real sourpuss.

here after her death Aug. 11 in her home. She had been seriously ill for more than a year and had been in failing
health for a long time. She had been a resident of the community for 50 years. Rev. Wm. Reddick, pastor,
conducted the services and was assisted by Rev. Lloyd Randolph, pastor of the Pleasant Valley Baptist church.
She had been a member of the Eakly church since 1927. . . .and to them nine children were born.
Survivors include her husband, . . .[Five sons: William of Weatherford; Charles of Paso Robles, Calif.;
Marion of Hydro; Jesse of Paso Robles; and Raymond of Eakly. Two daughters: Irene Chambers of Colony and
Flossie Thiessen of Colony. Four sisters: Margie Bishop of Altus, Mrs. O. L. Minor of Elk City, Celia Stone of

“Yearwood family still has many descendants in Eakly”

“When P. T. “Buster” and Dona Yearwood came to Oklahoma from Montague County, Texas, the year was
1907 and only three of their eight children were born.
“The Yearwoods first settled south of Eakly in the Alfalfa area, where Buster worked for Henry Horn for awhile
before they moved north of Eakly to the North Pleasant Valley Community. “After a brief time on another
rented place, Luther Skagg’s farm northeast of town, Buster moved his family to a farm in the Caddo Star
District, south of Eakly again, the farm where Carlos Squires now lives. “Homesick for Texas, Buster and his
family returned to Clay County for one year, 1919, but the grasshoppers ate them out; so the young couple
return to Eakly to stay, bringing seven children this time. Their youngest, Flossie, was born in 1923 on the farm
they’d purchased south of town, adjoining what is now the Floyd King place.
“By this time many of both Buster’s and Dona’s families (Yearwoods and Bishops) had migrated to Oklahoma
to live—most of them in the Caddo County area, too. As a matter of fact, all of Buster’s brothers and all but one
sister lived in the Alfalfa area at one time or another.
“Buster and Dona were always active in church work. He served for some years as Sunday School
superintendent of the Alfalfa Church of Christ. Then, he later helped build what is now the Eakly Methodist
Church, and he and a number of his family went on to become charter members of the Eakly Assembly of God
Church, where most of them who remain in this area are active till this day. “The Yearwoods lived in the
Alfalfa community during the Big War (WWI) and, like most of their neighbors, displayed a Liberty Bell poster
in their window showing they’d bought Liberty Bonds to support the war effort.
“As devastating as the war was, the influenza epidemic, which swept the country during that same decade, hit
the Alfalfa community hard, too. It was a time that really drew people together and drew out the most selfless,
generous natures of the pioneers here.
“Dona Yearwood’s children still tell of how she used to visit their afflicted neighbors, such as the Thurman
Repps, nearly daily carrying them soup, bathing babies, combing long bed-tangled hair, and just generally
giving comfort.
“All of the Yearwood family but Dona and their middle daughter Irene eventually got the flu. Thankfully, all of
their family survived.
“After many years farming, Buster finally moved to town in 1930 and set up a salvage business south of Eakly’s
main street. In those days, such a business was known very unglamorously as a “junkyard.” “Buster did well
though, and he and Dona remained in their little green house surrounded by the Ponderosa pines and myriads of
flowers he’d planted until their deaths. She passed away in 1954, and he followed in 1957. “Two of their
children, Jess and Charlie, moved to California during the Dust Bowl days and stayed, settling in the Paso
Robles area [southwest California]. The rest eventually settled in this general area—Eakly, Colony and Hydro.
Six of the children survive; only Flossie and Florence have passed away. “Though many of the Yearwood
progeny have found other homes, numerous of the clan remain within miles of the place Buster and Dona called
home.”

Bill owned two 160-acre farms on the east edge of Washita County (purchased in the 1940s). He operated one
of the farms and Indian-leased land to the southeast. His son, Glenn, operated the other farm. For many years,
Thelma maintained a large garden and shared the superb produce with family and friends.
Bill was very active in the Fairview Community Church, teaching Sunday school for many years, and later

became a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. He greatly loved fishing, an activity he would readily
do any day of the week except Sunday, the Lord’s day. Unfortunately, his mobility was greatly limited after a

“. . .He came to Oklahoma as a small child settling in the Alfalfa community of Caddo County. He attended
rural schools near his home and grew to manhood in that area. His first marriage to Melba Lee Baird on
September 22, 1927 ended in tragedy when a fire at the home took her life on February 3, 1930. A six-month
old son, Marion Dale Yearwood, preceded his mother in death nine days prior to the fire. He married Maxine
Cleo Hill on September 22, 1932, establishing a home very near the present home place know as “Ghost Mound
Farms,” which he purchased in 1939. Cleo Yearwood died in August 1976 after an extended illness and Marion
married Pauline Hill on October 31, 1979. Marion never tired for his love of farming and raising cattle, and
continued to devote all his energies to these endeavors until failing health about six months ago did not permit
him to work any longer. As a long-time member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon,
Sunday School teacher, and often played the piano. He was very active in civic affairs, having served as
Community Committeeman for several years and has been voted the area soil conservationist. He was an avid
fisherman, always meeting new friends on his many trips.”

Statement (April 25, 2002) by Carol Dona Anderson regarding the death of Melba Baird:
My father, Marion, and Melba Baird had one son, Marion Dale, born July 29, 1929. He died January 26, 1930,
due to a smothering accident. Melba died [the night of] February 3, 1930, when a fire at their home took her
life. The following is an account of that tragic event as told by my father and Uncle Beck (Raymond):
Melba and Edith, Uncle Jess’s wife, were preparing to cook dinner. Melba splashed kerosene onto the wood
from a can that had previously been used to hold gasoline. There was a flash fire, which engulfed Melba. At this
time, Edith ran from the house to a neighbor’s house. It is thought that she was in shock at the time. Uncle
Beck was about one fourth of a mile from the house when he either saw fire coming from the house, or someone
told him there was a fire at the house. I can’t remember the exact details of that. Anyway, he ran to the house
and went in through the backdoor because the smoke was coming from the kitchen. He said that if he had not
gone into the house through the back way he would not have heard a moan coming from the bedroom. He
found Melba in the bed with most of her clothes burned off. The ones that were not burned off were still
smoldering. He got her outside and tore the rest of the garments off. At this time she wanted to run to the stock
tank, but he would not let her. It was believed in those days that it would drive a burn in to put water on it.
They walked to a neighbor’s house, and the doctor was called. Uncle Beck said he still cannot understand how
she was able to walk that distance burned as badly as she was.

My father and Uncle Jess were working in the field at the time of the fire. They had started to the house when
someone ran to tell them what had happened. Daddy left the team of horses with Uncle Jess and ran to where
Melba was. But there was nothing he could do to help her.
Melba died that night. Uncle Beck said he would never forget any of it as long as he lived.

“Mrs. Maxine Cleo Yearwood, daughter of William N. & Eiza Jane Hill, was born on March 10, 1913 in
Hughes County, Oklahoma. She had been in failing health for a number of years and in serious condition for the
past few weeks. She passed away at Southwestern Memorial Hospital on Sunday morning at the age of 63
years, 5 months and 19 days. Mrs. Yearwood attended school at Dustin, Oklahoma and grew to womanhood in
that area. She moved with her family to Caddo County, Oklahoma in 1930, settling south of Hydro, Oklahoma. .
. “Survivors include her husband, Marion B. Yearwood, of the home south of Hydro, Oklahoma; two
daughters, Mrs. Bill (Carol) Anderson and Mrs. Dick (Evelyn) Blevins, both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma;
three sons, Dale Yearwood and Duane Yearwood both of Eakly, Oklahoma, and Deon Yearwood, Hydro,
Oklahoma; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Bond and Miss Pauline Hill, both of Eakly, Oklahoma; and
three brothers, Mr. Ralph Hill, Evergreen, Colorado; Rev. Bob Hill, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Mr. C. L.
Hill, Yakima, Washington. She was preceded in death by her father, William N. Hill, on May 29, 1951; two
sons, Marion Dale in 1933 and Maurice Darrol on September 19, 1970, and her mother, Eliza Jane on October
19, 1975.
“Cleo was very active in the Pleasant Valley Church. She taught Sunday School for many years. She loved
people and never met a stranger. Cleo and Marion loved to have the church people come to their home after
church services on Sunday evenings for refreshments and singing.”

Statement by Carol Dona Anderson (April 25, 2002):
Pauline had a beauty saloon in Eakly, Oklahoma. It was located across the street from Grandma Hill’s home.
Pauline looked after Grandma until she died, which was just ten months before Mama (Cleo, Pauline’s sister)
died. Mama and Pauline were always very close to one another and spent a lot of time together. It was very
difficult for Pauline when her sister died. Evelyn and I always made sure that Daddy would bring Pauline with
him when he came to Oklahoma City to visit us. Daddy’s kids could not have been happier when Daddy and
Pauline decided to get married. In fact, I had suggested to Daddy that he and Pauline get married. His remark to
me was, “I knew one of you kids would get around to that one of these days.” They were married October 31,
1979, and were together for sixteen years until Marion died December 28, 1995. Pauline moved to Weatherford,
Oklahoma, and still lives there.

Portland, Oregon. They moved back to Oklahoma, making their home north of Eakly, Oklahoma, and later
moved north of Colony [family farm], and then in 1961 they moved to Cordell. They resided there until 1984,
when they moved north of Colony [family farm].”

Nadine was a housewife who worked on the family farm northeast of Colony from the late 1940’s until her
death. She died suddenly of a heart attack while working late in the afternoon on September 21, 1993. Her
interests and talents included sewing, cooking, crossword puzzles, mystery books, crime stories, grandchildren,
and Colony.
Her grandfather (John H. Seger), who worked with the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians for many
years, founded the town of Colony, Oklahoma, in 1886.

“Maurice Darrol Yearwood, 29, was fatally injured about 3 P.M. Saturday when a car he was working on fell
off a jack and crushed him.
The accident happened at Yearwood’s house, six miles north of Eakly. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a
Weatherford hospital.

Statement by Lonnie Terry Yearwood (June 4, 2002):
Connie was crazy about horses and family. After the 1993 loss of our mother (Nadine), who had provided
“summer vacations” for Emily and “little” Connie (my daughters), “big” Connie on her own set aside a week of
her vacation each summer to take the girls swimming, horseback riding, playing in the park, etc. They loved it
and so did she, especially the trips to show the girls off at the bank where she worked. After I messed up my
hand in an ugly encounter with a lawn mower (don’t ask), it was Connie who, without being summoned,
showed up to help mow the large lawn until the hand healed, driving some 240 miles each trip. Connie’s boys,
Tom and Danny, provided some very unique (for lack of a better word) and enriching experiences in the
growing up years. I won’t mention the time that Danny, as a baby, rolled off his parents’ bed and through the
window, falling into a rose bush outside. Connie, in waking up as she heard the crying, became increasingly
miffed that some mother in the neighborhood was not taking care of her child. How could any mother she
thought just let a child go on and on like that and do nothing. It was about this time that she noticed the missing
screen on their bedroom window.
Nor will I mention the time she was frantically driving all over her Mustang (Okla.) neighborhood and beyond
trying to find Tom, who, at that time, was probably 3 to 4 years old. The pickup she was driving had a camper
shell. And undetected inside the camper shell was a young boy who had gotten tired of playing and had fallen
asleep. She discovered him just as she was about to drive the pickup to the police station to report him missing.
Connie was often seen taping her sons’ basketball and baseball games, sometimes getting so excited she forgot
or abandoned her camera duties. Viewers of the tapes on occasion got to watch segments of the bleachers,
close-ups of the floor, or the end of the basketball court with no players on it, typically when the crowd was
cheering the loudest.
