Qapco to sponsor chemistry meet
Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) has signed an agreement
with Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMU-Q) to be the principal
sponsor of the 2012 International Union for Pure and Applied
Chemistry (IUPAC) meeting.
This is the chemistry union’s 14th International Meeting on
Polymers and Organic Chemistry (POC 2012) and will mark the
first time an Arab country has hosted the prominent event.
Texas A&M at Qatar is a sponsor of the conference in
collaboration with Qatar Foundation.
Qapco general manager and board member Mohamed al-Mulla
and other officials Abdulrahman Ali al-Abdullah, Rashid al-Sulaiti,
Nasser al-Hajri, and Mishael Mohamed Ali Ansari were present.
Texas A&M Qatar was represented by dean and CEO Dr Mark
Qapco and Texas A&M at Qatar officials
Weichold, associate professor of chemistry and science
at the signing ceremony
programme co-ordinator Dr Hassan Bazzi, and other officials.
“We are glad to establish such a successful partnership with Texas A&M University at Qatar, which stems from
Qapco’s commitment as a national company towards the society, and in line with its corporate social responsibility,”
al-Mulla said.
Observing that Qatar has been witnessing a rapid development in the production of polymers, namely polyolefins,
using naturally occurring raw materials, Dr Bazzi said hosting the conference is a good indication of the increased
importance of the role that Qatar is playing in this field.
The conference’s main theme will be about the most recent research developments in the polyolefin sector, as well as
polymers in general.
