//// 06/19/2013 01.05 The Byzantines: Assessment A. 1. How would you name the school? What would be its mascot? Explain your choices. I would name my school Casper High School. The school’s mascot would be a ghost. Everyone knows Casper the friendly ghost. Ghosts are frightening to most people but, Casper never did any harm and always wanted to help out. That’s where the inspiration for the school name from. The school would be a friendly learning environment. Also, ghosts are intimidating and basically a spirit and evanescent. You can’t defeat a ghost because there’s no way to harm it since it has no physical form and is basically a shadowy figure. You feel a ghost’s presence and everything you throw at it passes right through it. Explosives, guns, and knives- all ineffective in conquering this invisible presence. That is where the inspiration for the mascot comes from, an invincible presence. 2. Why do you think symbols like a name or mascot are so important to the people of the city? Why would it be important to the students? Symbols like a name or mascot are so important to the people of the city because they represent and unify the people. People of a community or school consist of different religions and ethnicities and they are unified by the positive features and symbolic characteristics that the mascot displays. This would be important to the students because they can use the qualities of the mascot in achieving the goals set by the school. For instance, instead of thinking an assignment is too hard, a student would instead think of him being invincible and the assignment being merely a challenge to him. 3. What are two goals you could recommend the new principal to consider when opening up the new school? Goals I recommend that the new principle consider when opening up the new school are making learning more exciting and building the school into a team climate. After all, the school’s name and mascot implies a friendly learning environment. 4. Identify two challenges that principal may have in achieving those goals? Challenges the principal may have in achieving those goals are that it may be difficult to make learning exciting yet still easy to understand and, building the school into a team climate might be difficult if the school is diverse and people from different backgrounds do not get along or aren’t attracted to another group of people. B. 1. How does this controversy relate to the development of the Byzantine Empire? This controversy relates to the development of the Byzantine Empire because just like in school the foundation of the Byzantine Empire began with goal setting and working as a team and being unified. Also, the empire had a principal (leader) governing and working with his students in achieving those goals. 2. How does this controversy differ from issues in the Byzantine Empire? This controversy differs from issues in the Byzantine Empire because in the empire they had to deal with conquering and battle and war to achieve some of their goals.
