Doing Business in Emerging Markets PROF. MARCO MINCIULLO COURSE AIMS This course compares and contrasts the major differences in terms of infrastructure, economic development, technological advancement and the political and social system of emerging markets. The course is designed to equip students with the tools and insight needed to diagnose, evaluate and determine the feasibility and potential of entering into these markets from the perspective of an independent investor and/or of a multinational corporation. The course builds on a variety of concepts and theories drawn from Strategy and International Business fields. LEARNING OUTCOMES On completion of this course students will be able to: - Formulate a comparative analysis of the economic, political and social systems of the developing countries. - Appreciate the potential effects derived from the differences and similarities in the development levels of emerging markets compared to the industrialized economies. - Appreciate the potential effects derived from the differences and similarities in the development levels among emerging economies. - Evaluate different business models suitable for entering or operating in developing markets. COURSE CONTENT - Review of the general characteristics of emerging markets. Growing factors of the recently industrialized economies. New business models in emerging markets. Low income markets. Specificities of different emerging markets. Political influence in the development of emerging countries. Expansion strategies of emerging countries multinational corporations (EMNCs). Non - Attending Students Doing Business in Emerging Market, (2nd ed.)” by CAVUSGIL, GHAURI-AKCAL Publications - SAGE TEACHING METHOD The course is structured as a mix of lectures, group presentations and class discussion of assigned readings. It is therefore important that students read the material in advance and come to each class prepared to actively interact in class discussion. Active participation in the course activities, respectful behaviour towards classmates and professor, punctuality in attendance and assignment delivery is prescribed. ASSESSMENT METHOD Attending students – 50% of mark for group project and in class presentations on a 30-points scale; (Each group will analyse a firm from a selected industry, looking for potential ways of entering a specific emerging market. The project will include a Country/Industry Analysis, and an Entry Mode proposal). – 50% of mark for the written exam to be held during the official exam session (6 open question focused on required readings, teaching notes, guest speeches and group presentations, to be answered in 90 minutes) Non-attending students 100% of the final mark will be based on a written final exam (6 open questions about themes presented in the textbook, to be answered in 90 minutes) NOTES Information on office hours available on http://docenti.unicatt.it/. the teacher's personal page at
