Dates 12/8 Monday MCC5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. 12/9 Tuesday MCC5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. 12/10 Wednesday MCC5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. Essential Question/ Key Question Why is it important to know basic facts? What strategies can we use to solve multidigit multiplication? What strategies can we use to solve multidigit multiplication? What strategies can we use to solve multidigit multiplication? Lesson Opener Students will use the multiplication+ app to review multiplication facts of 3,4,6,8. Students will talk with a table buddy about the different strategies we can use to solve32 x 65. We will make an anchor chart about each strategy. Procedures/Strategies Independent practice, Direct Instruction, Differentiation guided instruction, Cooperative Learning, modeling Guided Practice Students will use the multiplication+ app to review basic facts. Students will “play the teacher”. They will instruct me as to how I should multiply 52 x 91 through each step. Differentiation: anchor chart, manipulatives We will use skittles to create an array for 7x2. After writing the number sentence, students will explore multiplying by 7 using Differentiation: anchor chart, multiplication grid Students will log into Classworks and begin exploring multiplication through a mini lesson and corresponding activities. Standard Time Time Time Lesson Summary Differentiation: anchor chart, multiplication grid We will review the standard algorithm for multiplying multidigit numbers. Next, we will work through a smartboard lesson on lattice Students will solve 87 x 34 individually and then check as a group. Direct Instruction, Guided Practice 12/11 Thursday 5th Grade will be gone on a field trip during this class. 12/12 Friday MCC5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. Direct Instruction, Guided Practice, Cooperative Learning Differentiation: anchor chart, multiplication grid We will work through the Minecraft Multiplication Smartboard lesson together. This will review basic facts, includes a video arrays to create 7x3, 7x4, and 7x5. Students will be prompted to make connections between adding on 7 to the previous number. Students will complete a multiplication assessment on multiplying by 3,4,6,7,8. Time Assessment/ Evaluation Formative Assessment Utilization of Technology ipad, multiplication+ app, smartboard Worksheets/Graphic Organizers multiplication. Students will review basic facts, then review how we do lattice multiplication. Students will complete guided practice problems throughout the smartboard lesson. Students who have difficulty with multiplying will be pulled to the table and work 1-on-1 with me. We will review strategies for basic multiplication as well as the algorithm for multiplying multi-digit numbers. After completing the lesson, students will practice multidigit multiplication on Study Island. connecting place value and multiplication, explores the box method with multiplication. Students will solve 2576 x 3 using blocks, then we will explore multiplying 25 x 14, 23 x 17, 58 x 26 and 35 x 42 using the box method. Students will explore several word problems. Lastly, students will create a multiplication word problem as a group.
