Discipleship at its best is servant-based.
3 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he
was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of
ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and
poured it over his head.
Mark 14:1-11
Discipleship at its Best
Discipleship at its best is willing to pay the price.
3 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he
was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of
ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and
poured it over his head.
Text Message:
o This unnamed woman was willing to pay the price in two
areas of life: financially and socially.
o Financially, if the disciples’ claim in Verse 5 is accurate, this
ointment represented about ten months of average wages.
o Alabaster vases like the above have been found in ancient
tombs with the scent still present!
o That the woman is unnamed indicates she was not wealthy.
o In other words, she was willing to pay an irrevocable price by
breaking the flask and anointing Jesus.
o Her loving sacrifice is marked in contrast to the irritation of
the disciples, who viewed it as a waste!
o Socially, she crossed gender barriers in the ancient world
and such an act would’ve been considered scandalous.
o In a twist of fate, what normally would’ve been told about her
to malign her would be told as a memorial to her!
o Is there a price this Lenten Season that I am called to pay?
Text Message:
o Jesus had previously described to his disciples what
leadership in the kingdom looks like (Mark 10:42-45).
o Top-down domination is replaced with bottom-level serving.
o What the disciples had originally argued over was being
demonstrated by one outside their group.
o Where in life do I need to keep in check leadership that is
top-down, dominant, and recognition based?
Discipleship at its best is beautiful in Jesus’ eyes.
6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has
done a beautiful thing to me.
Text Message:
o Note: This is the only time in all of the recorded words of
Jesus that he describes something as beautiful!
o What the disciples deemed wasteful, Jesus saw as beautiful!
o Jesus could’ve called it extravagant, costly, and generous.
o Jesus called it beautiful, which is the language of love.
o Do I really get it that Christ calls me to a love affair?
Discipleship at its best is discerning of the times.
8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand
for burial.
Text Message:
o Jerusalem at this time would have been filled with the odor
of burning sacrifices mixed with incense from the temple.
o Her action reveals discernment in what Jesus’ mission really
is, and a belief in not only his burial but resurrection!
o For this, some have referred to her as the first believer!
