Stanley School PTO Welcome Packet 2012-2013 Dear Stanley School Families, Welcome to the new school year! To returning families and those new to Stanley, we invite you to join us in what promises to be a year filled with learning, growth and new experiences and opportunities for our children. We encourage parents to get involved in any and all ways that best suit your schedule and life. From attending monthly PTO meetings to chairing a committee or event, or simply sharing ideas, no contribution is too small. We are all parents and understand the demands and limitations that life puts on us. The PTO is made up of different committees that plan events & programs that add to our children’s experience while at Stanley School. Our Cultural Arts committee brings local authors, poets, musicians, artists as well as dance, yoga and Tae Kwon Do programs into the classroom. Our after school programming provides opportunity for additional exposure in art, music, science and nature, language arts, technology and sports. The Book Fair, Holiday Fair, Science Day, Talent Show, Fitness Walk and Fun Field Day provide fun activities that the children look forward to each year. Please take some time to read thru this packet, which contains information and important dates for the year. As well, you will find the Dues & Directory Registration Form, which should be filled out and returned to school with your dues check by Friday, September 21. Please feel free to contact us any time with questions, thoughts or ideas. We look forward to a great year with you all! Without the support of Stanley families, the PTO would not be able to offer the array of programs and support we are currently able to provide to the staff and students. Because of the dues and fundraising efforts we are able to offer strong programs in many areas of learning, the arts and health. We are also able to support the staff in ways that directly benefits your children, such as grants for teacher development. For parents, it’s a wonderful way to connect with other Stanley families and a hands-on way to show your child that you want to be involved in their school. Do I have to attend the PTO meetings to be a PTO member? Meetings are not mandatory, but they are a great way to connect with the school community and to find out what is happening at Stanley. Each month Mr. Daniels keeps us informed of new and important issues with his Principals Report as well as teacher presentations given by grade team on topics that grade is currently covering. Input from parents of all grades is vital to making the PTO represent all interests of the entire student body. Why are Stanley PTO dues higher than other area schools? Stanley parents voted a few years ago to raise the dues instead asking our membership to sell items such as wrapping paper or magazine subscriptions. We do have additional fundraising sources (e.g., t-shirts sales, Holiday Fair, ad sales in the directory, etc…), however, none of them requires a child to be involved in selling merchandise. Do I need to join the PTO to receive a school directory? No. Although the PTO produces the directory, all families will receive a copy. What is the PTO/SCHOOL Listserv and will my email address be shared? The listserv is an unpublished list of e-mail addresses, used by the PTO and school office for the express purpose of disseminating information about PTO and school news, events and activities. We strongly encourage you to provide your email address so that you may stay informed on all school happenings. Your e-mail will not be given out to anyone else for any other purpose. What is the difference between PTO opportunities and SPIRIT opportunities at Stanley? The PTO is comprised of parent volunteers who organize and run programs and events for the students as well as supporting the administration and staff. The SPIRIT program (Stanley Parents Inspire Reinforce Instill Teach) is organized and managed by Stanley School Staff. SPIRIT volunteering is more classroom specific whereas PTO events are school wide. What is the difference between PTO After School Program and the Stanley School Extended Day? Extended day provides families with the opportunity for early drop off and late pick up and is offered throughout the entire school year. PTO After School Programs are enrichment programs that are 8-10 week sessions offered in the Fall and Spring. Examples of ASP programs include Art Classes, IPad classes, and Lego Club. Students enrolled in extended day may also sign up for PTO After School Programs.
