Go to File in the upper left corner of the Word screen and click to open it.
Slide down to the bottom of the list and click on Options
Open the third choice down, “Proofing.”

In the fourth set of options from the top of that window, select “When correcting spelling and grammar in
Word.” Checkmark all 5 boxes there, including “readability statistics.”
Just below where you checkmarked “Show readability statistics,” on the line that says “Writing Style,” select from the pull-down
arrow to change the setting from “Grammar only” to Grammar & Style. Next to that, click the “Settings” window.
In the “Grammar Settings” window, set the first three questions to suit the style of writing your instructor or class has requested. In
MLA style, you would put “always,” “inside” and “1.” In APA style, you would put “always,” “inside” and “2.”

Next, go down through the Grammar and style options section and checkmark all the boxes; IF and only if your instructor permits
you to use first person, then un-check that box. Leave the rest check-marked.
Now you are ready to spell-check your document. Go to the Review tab at the top of your Word document (sixth one to
the right) and click on “Spelling & Grammar.”
In order for readability statistics to show up at the end of your essay, you must complete every step of spellcheck. If you
quit early, or tell Word to “ignore” the issues in your essay, it will not show the final window with your results.
When you complete the spell and grammar check process, a window like this will display:
Because you are a college student, your goal should be to write at the college level, which is Flesch-Kincaid
Grade Level 13.0 or higher. Your goal for percentage of Passive Sentences should be 0%. The Flesch Reading
Ease indicates difficulty of the text; a 20 would be a jargon-filled technical paper, and a set of simple directions
would be an 80, so a good goal here is 40 to 60. In order to raise your grade level, increase the length and
complexity of your sentences and vocabulary words, and eliminate all grammatical, spelling, and usage
errors.Increase the length of your words (“characters per word”) significantly in order to increase your
vocabulary score, which will raise your grade level. A good goal is 8 sentences per paragraph, 18 or more words
per sentence, and 6 characters per word (which is an average score). A perfect Reading Ease score would be
100%, which would reflect a paper that read as easily as melted butter, but would be nearly impossible to attain.

How to take a screenshot of your statistics and paste them on your paper
On a PC, go to the Start menu All programs  Accessories and find the Snipping Tool:
If you want to keep it handy, right click on the image and click “Add to taskbar” so it will float at the bottom of your
computer screen.
When you open the snipping tool, you’ll see this:
Click on “New” and select “Rectangular snip:
This action will bring up crosshairs; drag that around the image on the screen that you want to capture; drag from top left to bottom
right, then let go when you have surrounded the image you want. This will place the screen capture into an editing box in Paint, where
you’ll see that you have an email option and a pen, highlighter, and eraser to edit the clip if you want to. For our purposes now, we
only want to copy it, so go to Edit and click on Copy. This places the image on the clipboard, and now you are ready to paste the
image on your document.
With the image of your Readability Stats or photo or screenshot now in the clipboard, go to your document and paste the image in the
place you want the image (either click on “paste” under File, or, hit Control+V [quick command for paste].
